I like Kelvin's game he been playing good for backing up Yao if Larry starts him for a couple of games and then start yao for a couple of games then will see who gots the better game.

Never ever going to happen because Cato does not have the drive, discipline, determination, grit and work ethic it takes. Like Matt Bullard said last night, Cato was "born" to impact the game as a backup.

Welcome back Mrs. Cato, did you get yourself a new SN? :)

Kelvin Cato has had a couple years to becoem a decent player, he didn't. He is a good backup (like he's showed this year) but for whatever reason whne we gave him chances he didn't do a thing

There are several reasons why Cato is playing so well.

First, he plays so few minutes during most of the season that he's pretty much totally fresh every time he plays.

Second, absolutely no defense respects him, so most of his alley-oop dunks come from being totally unguarded.

Third, the defense uses the time when Yao's out to play smaller lineups and concentrate on the backcourt giving Cato more rebounds and seemingly stronger inside presence.

Don't get me wrong though, Cato's effort has been awesome and he has been more effective than Yao in several games. I'm just saying the above is IMO the reason for his consistency.

I am much more happy with Cato coming off the bench. He knows his role and is playing well. The one problem I have with him is that on defense he slouches over, taking away some of his height. But he is playing well. No big complaints.

You want to know what is funny?

Think about this. According to the Rockets coaching staff, the main reason the Rockets don't play Cato (at PF) with Yao is because of Cato's limited offensive game and the Rockets believe because he can't hit the ouside jumpshot and is a liability offensively and thus can't play alonside Yao.

Well, what is funny is, is if the Rockets actually HAD Ben Wallace would they play him at PF with Yao? Not according to the above logic!

Many of the people on the BBs feel that what the Rockets need is a rebounding brute at PF spot. Yet, even if we had one we would not play that person with Yao!

    Go figure!

I wonder if people (myself included) would be so hard on Cato if not for his contract.

    Brother Please...

I agree I like the way Cato is playing, but unfortunately, it only began this season when he lost his starting job...

Wow, now I've seen everything. Cato HAD his chance to be the man last year. He's a solid backup, let's leave it at that.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go start a new thread about Larry Smith's coaching.

Interesting post, and one I have thought about.

The frustration many of us feel with EG is the 3 pt line but he is still there. Because? Because that is where he is being placed/spaced?

So, it seems, the Rox' prototype 4 is Brand X, no not Elton - LaFrentz.

I totally agree, Rudy T is trying to make the Rockets the same team from 94-95, which on the surface may seem correct, but Yao is a different player from Olajuwon. I don't think they are getting the full benefit of his skills just posting him up and have outher players cutting. They can do more with Yao, he's a more talented version of Vlade and he should be placed outside the lane some times to take advantage of the penetration and dish back to him for the jumpshot. His jumpshot is the most unstopable weapon because no one can block it, and you can't lean on him like when he has his back to the basket.
