I think the Rockets could keep Beverley out of your deal and still get it done. It is a "competitive offer" but perhaps not the "best offer." The Rockets don't need the "best offer" because they can be LMA's destination of choice in the summer of 2015 no matter what Portland does. So the 'leverage' is in Houston's favor and thus just need to offer a 'competitive trade asset package' (versus Best.)

I think Reggie Jackson (no guarantee in 2014), Asik, and T-Jones + their 2nds + 2015 1st (with Lin going to a 3rd team) for LMA + Robin Lopez + 3rd team filler is the way to go. 3rd team would have to give up an asset to Portland as well.

It is definitely a trade deadline deal, we are done until then.

I would look for Phoenix to try to get involved to get rid of Dragic, as Bledsoe is going to get paid.

You know I've been sort of in the camp for some time that February 2014, the Rockets are setting up their assets in the perfect scenario to make ANOTHER James Harden type of trade.

I think Asik's value in a trade will be at its ultimate peak during the season.

    Why February-

-In the Summertime, other free agents are available (Pekovic, Dalembert, Oden, etc.)
-In the first few weeks of the year, young bigs are going to get a chance with the hopes that they will pan out..... many will fail, and leave the coaches and front office in a situation where they need to upgrade the big spot for the long haul
    -Injuries happen
-Teams change direction right around February when they can pretty much project whether or not they will be a playoff team or not.
-Also there will be surprise teams that are better than some had projected, and might see a true dominant defensive center as the missing piece.

So look at the package the Rockets can give in trade-

Asset #1 - Asik- great value, defensive anchor, 2 year contract
Assets #2- First round picks Galore - potentially up to 3 first rounders over the next 6 years to give out with flexible protection.
Assets #3 - Great young talent- Jones, D-Mo, Smith, etc.

-Edit- Totally forgot about Isiah Canaan.... going to be the type of player GM's always try to sneak in a trade. Great asset and value contract.

*Keep in mind that with a great start to the season and an expanded role, Asset #3 could quickly turn into Asset #1 or #2 making a deal like that even more enticing.

I'm not positive that the Rockets will be a contending team (albeit surely a playoff team) by any stretch in year 1, but if the next move (assuming February trade deadline deal) is to bring in as good of a player I think they can get, this team will surely put themselves in the conversation of teams like the Heat, OKC, and the Spurs overnight....

    That's pretty exciting.

    Asik + Beverley + DMo + Rockets 2014 & 2016 1st + 2 2nds (returned to Portland) for LMA.

Everyone says this, but I really don't think it's far off. Aldridge is the BEST PF IN TODAY'S NBA, and he's under contract for the next TWO years.

Using the Harden trade as a comparison:

    Asik > Martin
    DMo < Lamb
    #29 (2014) and #30 (2016) is roughly equivalent to Dallas 1st (top 20 protected through 2017, UNPROTECTED in 2018)
Beverley + Returning Portlands 2 2nd rounders is nowhere close to the Toronto 1st we gave OKC

Also remember we got Harden at a DISCOUNT due to OKC financial situation. Portland has no such problem.

Now if we're talking 2015 trade deadline, then the trade probably becomes...

    Asik
    DMo
    2015 + 2017 1st

I would say don't invest much on another big. The days that bigs dominate NBA games are long gone.

I'd use a PF/SF who is also a good hustle parameter defender, young KG type of player.
Nicolas Batum, Kawhi Leonard, Kenneth Faried, Harrison Barnes, even Trevor Ariza ....

In the last three seasons, Josh Smith's average RAPM(combine defense and offense) is better than LMA, and Kevin Pelton's WARP tells similar story.

Feign reports that part of the reason we don't get Josh Smith is his asking salary(should be a little less than what he got from Detroit and on par with LMA).

It makes think that we wouldn't be happy paying LMA his current salary. Let our young players grow and wait for a possible chance at Love if necessary is better option.

That lineup would crush opposing teams.

    Yes! Morey's plan is to balance in current win and future development;
He will be patient before 2014/2015

It's pretty awesome that stars want to come here now. Harden was on board, Dwight signed with us, and now we're on Aldridge's list. The great thing is that we honestly have the assets to pull of another trade. I wonder if Kevin Love has any interest in Houston, considering that he's good friends with Harden and has a connections with McHale?

That is an unimaginably perfect starting 5.

realistically we can't keep asik and lin and pull in alridge.

Morey and coach have already said Asik will play a vital role in us winning a championship. No such thing was mentioned about lin other than players being ready to play with him. So i think dumping asik will be one of the last things we do. I see lin and Dmo or someone else gone

Good thing is that LaMarcus Aldridge will be able to work with Hakeem and McHale on post moves

Boston Out: Kris Humpries, Courtney Lee
    Boston In: Eric Gordon

    Portland Out: LaMarcus Aldridge
    Portland In: Kris Humphries, T.Jones, Hou 2014 1st, Hou 2016 1st, NOLA 2016 1st

New Orleans Out: Eric Gordan, 2016 1st (top 5 protected)
New Orleans In: Omer Asik and D-Mo

    Houston Out: Omer Asik, T. Jones, D-Mo, Hou 2014 1st, Hou 2016 1st
Houston In: LaMarcus Aldridge, Courtney Lee

Boston: Unloads low key players to take a chance on a potential all-star talent.

New Orleans: Unloads Eric Gordan's unhappy contract and a late Lotto or late 1st round pick

Portland: Rebuilds by getting Humphries expiring contract, young talent in T.Jones, and 3 future first round picks. (hell if they want 1 of the 2nd round picks back...give back)

Houston: They get a third star in Aldridge and a veteran back SG in C.Lee for Asik, young talent and future picks.

    Which team says no?
