Not after getting humiliated on national TV by shaq and tim duncan on consecutive nights in the rockets last national TV appearance. Add the fact that the rockets are now in 9th place in the west behind the suns, and you got your winner, Amare. Amare has been quoted as saying he is not afraid of a single player in the NBA, and the league likes that. Ask Yao who he is afraid of and he will probably have a laundry list. Yao is playing with too much fear and is too soft to beat out Amare for the award. Sad, but true. If you're holding your breath for Yao to win the award, you'll be holding it a long time.
If he continues to struggle, Yao surely can't get the ROY. But we still have a couple of games to go, Yao still has a chance to prove whether he is the true ROY. Just wait and see. Larry Smith can never use Yao as good as Rudy, so what you have commented here may come true at the end.
How many games have the rockets won on national TV this year? The only one I remember is the game vs the Lakers where Stevie had 44 points. That's not gonna get your rookie ROY either.
Even if Yao has some decent numbers in the remaining games, its not going to mean much considering his performances against the 2 best BIG men in the WEST on NATIONAL TV. When you watch sportscenter and see more highlights of Yao getting dunked on than doing something good, but the opposite of Amare, then you already know ahead of time who wins ROY. I wish I could say Sportscenter was showing only the bad of Yao ming and not the good, but I can't lately. Amare wins ROY especially with the Suns in 8th place.
All the endorsement contracts and commercials have spoiled Yao Ming. He realizes that he is going to make heaps of money from the endorsements, regardless of his play on the court. Basketball is not his priority. His priority is landing the next endorsement contract or shooting the next commercial. Thanks to Yao Ming, the Rockets have lost 3 of the last 4 games. His horrendous play contributed to the 3 losses. Missing the clutch free throws cost the Rockets the Sacramento game. Horrible shot attempts and soft, non-agressive play cost the Rockets the Lakers and Spurs games.
I think the person witht he best stats wins. Yao has the best stats. Screw all of you if you think Amare is better. He is not.
Wonder why I doubt any of you are serious Rocket fans? Lets jump on the band wagon when they are hot, and then run them down when they do not do well!
I wouldn't say he only cares about the money, or even the endorsements. I just think he doesn't have the mental toughness to play well in this league. I don't think that is something that can ever be changed if you don't "got it." Why is it that high schoolers coming into the NBA got more confidence and swagger than a supposedly hardened, experienced Chinese basketball player. He's the second tallest player in the NBA and probably the 3rd heaviest, but that means squat if you don't think you can, should, and will DUNK at will.
I'm a rocket fan. The difference between you and me is that I'm an objective and realistic rocket fan. If Yao plays like **** in the latter part of the season and helps the rockets to miss the playoffs, why should he win Rookie of the Year?
I think most votes for ROY are sent in before the season is even over with...so a good amount of voters might not even be effected by what Yao is doing currently.
For those that don't think he will win ROY, you will eat your words. And when you do, don't say you knew it all along, you fair-weathered, bandwagon-affect unappreciative fans.
If voting was being down at the end of the regular season, theres no way he would win the award. Besides, with Amare playing well and Yao not, Amare will probably have a higher ppg average and then the voters will have all the justification they need to give the award to Amare.
Trickdaddy hasn't started it yet. Can't believe after 2 bad games he's all over Yao. Oh well some people........
Let's do this one, just for fun: Yao follows up an embarassing performance vs Shaq with more fouls than points vs Tim Duncan and the Spurs on 1 for 9 shooting. He should win rookie of the year! Granted he only played 16 minutes but his shot attempts were awful for a guy who is 7'6" 300 lbs and the #1 pick in the draft.
