I personally don't much care about the players private lives (although Zo flying back for the birth of his daughter during the Olympics was touching).

It takes all kinds of personalities to make any business a success. Whether it's the youthful enthusiam of Steve and Cat or the stoic concentration of Shandon or the humor of Carlos or the reverance of Dream. Let it be.

One of my neighbors works at the National Institutes of Health, which is near our house. A couple of his colleagues do research on genetic markers for sexual orientation. The most interesting pattern they've come up with so far, which seems to work about 90% of the time, is a quirk involving the middle and ring fingers. The idea was prompted by anecdotal evidence, and now they're doing a whole study on it.

Basically, each guy in the study is asked to fold the middle finger of his right hand (the pattern works in either hand, but for consistency's sake they just work with the right hand) forward as far as possible, as though he were making a fist with just that one finger. Then he has to press his hand palm-down on a flat surface (leaving the other four fingers spread out as though the hand were open) until both knuckles of the middle finger are touching the flat surface. With the hand in that position, the guy is then asked to lift his ring finger off the surface.

Before they ran the test, they asked each guy to fill out a questionnaire, which included his sexual orientation. What they've found so far is that about 10% of the sample couldn't raise their ring finger off the table. When they cross-checked the results with the questionnaire, they found that around 60% of these guys had said on the questionnaire that they were gay.

Now here's the really weird thing: They did a follow-up penile arousal test on the other 40% who couldn't lift the ring finger. Without going into gross detail, it measures your physical response to visual images. And THREE-FOURTHS of the guys in the 40% group turned out to be sexually aroused by erotic images of other men.

My neighbor says the study isn't finished yet, and they still have no idea what the connection is, other than the obvious implication that both traits (sexual orientation and finger coordination) are controlled by the same gene. But I'd love to know how Francis and Mobley do on the test.
