I've been on the road for the past 14 months (Sunday/Monday-Thursday) and have racked up well over 1.2 million frequent flier miles/hotel points.

Try to negotiate up to $95,000. Stick with one airline and rack up the miles. I have used Southwest, and I get a lot of free flights through their frequent flier system.

I tried. Recruiter said based on my experience the best she can do is 90. Original offer was 85. I asked for 95. She called back a few hours later and did 90. I said I will decide by friday. 95 does make this a little easier.

I am not saying I want to do this for life..but like someone said earlier, it can help towards the NEXT job. Maybe 2-3 years of this. I am only 28.

I would do it and try to accumulate miles that you can use in the future on international travel. So after you no longer travel for work you will have a bunch a roundtrip flights all around the world you can use. At least that is what I would do.

Sajan, If you don't mind me asking, I'm curious who the employer is. I do the same exact thing (i'm actually on a client site right now) and that is significantly higher than what I am pulling in right now.

Is it the vendor directly or 3rd party? You can pm if you want to talk about it discretely. Thanks

Damn so I have to make an awkward call to let the recruiter know I am not interested anymore.

mon - she called to offer 85, i asked for 95
mon - she called back to offer 90, i said hmm..give me a few days to think this over (by friday)

tue - asked about tuition reimbursement (doesnt start till year 3). so i asked to include that for the first 2 years

wed - called back saying she is working on that, i said that's good..and hinted i am in still interested and things are more looking more positive

thu - got a voicemail..too late to call back since it was after hours already.

By now I have lost some interest and I am not as excited about packing my bags to go do a traveling job..especially knowing some changes are coming at my current employer.

I feel like I dragged this out too long and showed too much interest only to turn it down now.

Deckard nailed it. Read that close. You will either like it after 6 mos somewhat or hate it. Keep that in mind

I love traveling...might say it's in my blood (army brat).

Also love learning and seeing new things, new life, new experiences, new roads to ride.

And then you throw in a 20% pump...count me in.

A lot more if you factor in housing, food and time away from family...as much as 50% more...

20% would not be worth it, IMO.

    Update:

So I ended up taking a job back in Houston. All together I was on the road for a little over a year. The last 6 months were after getting married.

    Pros of the travel job:
    -higher pay
-meet new people/clients on a weekly basis
-explore new cities...mostly eating at good restaurants
    -per diem
    -rewards (airline, hotel)

    Cons:
-hard to get a routine going at home i.e. workout, volunteering
-less time to run errands since you are out during the week days
-spending hours on end at the airport
-not every city is NYC and San Fran...you gotta go to Tulsa and Gulfport..
-eating out is good, but hard to eat healthy
-everything you hate about travel: repeat it weekly..the packing, the airport parking, security lines, boarding, taxiing...list goes on. lol.

Some days I wish I was traveling instead of sitting in a cube, but I am glad to be home 7 days a week..sleeping in my bed.

I would do it, but I am single and I would not mind the travel. If you dont have to work after business hours, or on weekends, I dont see what the issue is.

Have you been able to start getting airline rewards that help you avoid some of the lines? You say you are Indian. Are you an American citizen or permanent resident? If so have you applied to get the TSA Precheck status? That is a great time saver as well.
