You wanted, you got it. The South Carolina Legislature passed a resolution calling for the Chicks to apologize and perform a free concert for South Carolina troops. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=529&e=2&cid=529&u=/ap/20030320/ap_en_mu/dixie_chicks Can't believed I missed this. It may have been posted already, sorry if it has.
I must say passing a resolution is a little bit much. Maines has already apologized. No need for her to do it again. A free concert for the troops? While that would be nice, I don't know how that helps the situation.
Did anyone like the Dixie Chicks' music that much anyway? (well, I guess so... someone was buying all those CDs... just never saw what was so great about it) What about that video that keeps airing where Natalie has her hair pulled back on both sides and they keep on focusing on the dark roots in the middle... They're not (all) blondes, and they're not from Dixie. Trust me. They have the right to believe what they want to, and I buy plenty of music by people whose viewpoints are the opposite of mine. Everybody isn't going to agree on everything. (especially if you're conservative - better like country music, or you might not have anything left to listen to) At the same time, I'd rather them shut up about it when they come to play their concerts. There's nothing about their looks or musical talent that makes them any more of an expert on these issues than the rest of us. Do we really care to hear it?
Why would you want to hear their reception here? The Dixie Chicks would probably be cheered and get an offer to play on the main mall in front of the clocktower.
heres comes the gestapo. guys like this sheep Gallagher and these South Carolina legislator dumbos are just giving this thing momentum. they're not doing anything honorable or patriotic, they're just pawns. but they know not what they do. feels like this is the age of deception. its everywhere, east, west, north, south, outward and inward. It doesnt matter whether one agrees with the chix are not. what will matter for one is that one does not lean the wrong way and that one salutes whatever flag they offer. but the hard part nowdays is knowing which way to lean because the constitution is being ripped apart so damn fast.
From people who never even liked their music... When it's over, they can all go do something proactive that is going to change the world - like sitting in the middle of Guadalupe Street and blocking traffic - instead of going to class or doing anything useful.
The article said nothing about the state government being involved in this. This is one person doing something against another person. There is nothing unconstitution about this. Just because you are guaranteed freedom of speech doesn't mean you are free to say whatever you want and not expect a backlash from people outside the government who don't agree with you. Quit being so dramatic.
What's funny is that their album actually moved up on the charts (dunno whether it's country or overall) the week after all the boycotting began. Guess they're not very good at it.
How does it not? I can say that Joe Schmoe has a right to believe in the death penalty, and I can disagree with that opinion. These people have every right to boycott whatever the hell they want, even if I don't agree with the boycott. It's not that hard to understand.
Yep, in today's climate, if you don't agree with the war, best just to be a hypocrite. Apparently Clear Channel broadcasting, which has a very powerful hold on this nation's radio broadcasting, has a top executive who just happened to purchase a certain pro baseball team in Texas that George W. Bush happened to.... Well, let's just say that it's not gonna be easy to voice your opinion against this administration.
You forget who our Governor was and the non partisan support he had. Just because 1,000 tree huggin hippies blocked a street doesn't mean 15,500 will cheer the Dixie Chicks.
Apparently non of this has hurt their record sales. http://www.billboard.com/billboard/charts/bb200.jsp Currently they are #7. Down from #4. They sold over 6 million copies.
I'm not taking sides in this, because personally I don't understand why people are getting so worked up about this...But I do follow the music charts regularly, and to say that this won't hurt them is pretty unrealistic. If you look at the radio airplay chart, in one week "Landslide" fell from #10 to somewhere in the 40s, and "Travellin Soldier" went from #25 to somewhere in the 90s in two weeks! Their album sales haven't taken a huge hit right away, but it will hurt the total for the album. The Dixie Chicks released something like 8 singles that all did very well from one of their CDs. Considering they were only on their third single and had already sold in the neighborhood of 5 to 6 million albums(just because an album is certified 6X platinum doesn't mean its actually sold that many), I think they could have potentially outsold their previous two CDs, but now they will probably see their sales steadily decline... Just because their album hasn't dropped like a rock, doesn't mean the sales aren't decreasing. Compared to last weeks sales, "Home" sold almost 50% less this week than it did in the previous week.
Well, first its an phraseology. Are you saying that you agree with the DC? If not why did you only say that disagreed with the boycott? You seem to be saying both that people have a right to their opinion AND that people should not boycott. Those would seem to be inconsistent stances.
Big difference between radio play and sales. Sure the radio play has dropped substantially, but sales have not and that is what matters most. It's not like they need any more exposure at this point.
