The article isn't working for me. Can someone explain please? Oh, and pgabriel , why are you being so harsh? I probably need to read the article, but you called Pole an idiot and a racist. How well do you know this guy?

Here's the text of the article.

    3 million Chinese drink urine
    6/1/01

Beijing - More than three million Chinese drink their own urine in order to live healthier and longer lives, state media reported on Friday.

One of them is Zhu Jinfu, a 71-year-old senior engineer from the eastern city of Nanjing, who has been drinking his own urine since he was 13, the Xinhua news agency said.

Zhu told 300 participants at an academic seminar held this week in northeastern Liaoning province that he got the idea from his ancestors, who had enjoyed great longevity due to their drinking habits.

Yang Liansheng, a professor from the Liaoning Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine, was quoted by Xinhua as trying to give a scientific explanation of the alleged benefits of drinking urine.

"Urine is turned into something like blood serum after it is filtered by the kidney," he said. "Therefore, urine contains no bacteria and is more sanitary than blood."

The tradition of urine drinking has roots all the way back to ancient China, according to a website that promotes urine as "the fountain of youth".

An ancient pharmaceutical dictionary, "Shang Han Lun," recommends mixing medical herbs with urine in order to enhance the impact of the medication. - Sapa-AFP

In contrast, here are a few classic southern home remedies:

    Colds and Pneumonia

    Cow Manure
Put in a bag, boil it, add sugar or flavoring if desired and drink it

Female Cramps after having a Baby

Go outside one's house, walk backwards around the house 3 times carrying a thimble of water. Once done, give the water to the baby and this should stop your body cramps caused from exposure to the outside air

    Remedies for infants and children

    Frequent Urinating
Place a baby by the door and step over them. This will keep the baby from urinating frequently while you are away from home.

    Colic in Babies
Take a teaspoon of baby's milk, blow smoke from a cigarette over the teaspoon of milk, and feed this to the baby. Also blow the smoke in the baby's face and in the mold of their head. This stops the cramping feeling infant's experience during this time.

    Navels
Tape a half-dollar coin to the infant's navel or belly button. This will prevent the navel from protruding

    Thrush (white cakey tongue)
Catch the infant's urine on a cloth diaper and wipe the infant's tongue with the diaper. Because their urine is purer at this age, this will eliminate the thrush your baby has.

Star or Styes in one's eye

Go to the fork in the road, make a cross, spit in it, turn around, spit on your finger and cross the star in your eye. Then say "Star, Star, get off my eye and get on the 1st one past". Turn around, don't look back leave.

Long periods of Bleeding or Nose Bleeds

    Bible Scripture
Read Verse Ezekial 6:16, 3 times backwards to the person experiencing the bleed. By the time you have read this verse the 3rd time, the bleed should stop or at least have slowed down.

What's the point of posting this. I really doubt that Pole was trying to be racist. Am I racist by pointing out some really goofy things that people in the South have done to cure ailments? Ya'll need to lighten up a bit.

Because the history of his posts, you're right though, I shouldn't call him a racist, but reading an article about a small segment of a group of people, and linking the actions of that small segment to the group as a whole is prejudice, its the definition of the word, and if he can't see that he's an idiot.

ok, let me get this straight..

a guy makes an assumption that an age-old practice by a small percentage of people of one culture may be a cultural difference because he hasnt heard of it being done in another culture is being racist??

    get a grip...

I have seen many over-reactions on this board over the years...but DAMN!...

Pole... I don't think you were dogpiled on...out of the first 10 replies...only one person really jumped on you. I didnt read rimbauds post as jumping on you...only pg's..(big surprise there)..

IMO they were just pointing out that the practice isn't necessarily indicitive of the Asian culture..

anyway....if that is the secret to long life.....count me as dead before 50..;)

Thanks Rockets2K, and thanks for the huge help yesterday.

I shouldn't be surprised about this, and I shouldn't let it piss me off.

I've been outspoken before against affirmative action. This makes me a racist to some.

I don't think people who are against affirmative action are racist.

I think people who take one attribute about a small percentage of a specific culture, and link it to the whole culture are ignorant. You're right, you're not a racist, you're just ignorant.

hmmm, drinking urine is an attribute?? maybe a weird medical practice...but not an attribute...and it was never presented as an attribute..

If someone hears about a "weird medical practice" that is practiced by a segment of a particular culture, and he has never heard of it being used by any other culture....that would make it an assumption on his part. People make unfounded assumptions all the time withour deserving to be called ignorant..or racist..

    Ever heard of a mistake?
come on pg..just admit you over-reacted and let's get over it already.
