(AP) -- The Houston Astros optioned shortstop Adam Everett to Triple-A New Orleans on Monday and reassigned four others to the minors. Everett, a member of the U.S. gold medal Olympic team in 2000, was Houston's starting shortstop on opening day last season. He hit .189 in 14 games to start last season before being optioned to New Orleans. Also reassigned were infielder Tripp Cromer, right-handed pitcher Scott Linebrink and catchers Chris Tremie and Alan Zinter, who made his major league debut last season after 14 seasons in the minors. Houston's roster was reduced to 30 players.
I was hoping Adam and Morgan would be more competative and "bring it" to be starters in this league... If Lugo plays as well as last year and Blum consistently plays, we should be great...
good everett sucks, cant hit and thats what matters, morgan on the other hand was decent, sorry to see him go , go astros!
Well, we did get Greg Miller too...and Miller has been damn good. The problem is that he has been injured so much, he can't string a full season together. I think he was relatively injury free last season however, and he was kind of up and down. But it does seem like we ended up getting hosed on that trade, even though Carl did have his problems.
I was kind of hoping Ensberg would get another shot. He was hitting .333 this spring with a .615 SLG%. By comparison Blum is hitting .250 with .286 SLG% (no OBP or BB stats available on ESPN).
I saw Ensberg in New Orleans when I went there on vacation last Summer. Dude was not very good...made some fielding mistakes and didn't swing the bat very well. Hopefully, he's improved. Do the Zephyrs still have J.D. Artiagas? That dude was getting slammed when I saw him pitch last year...
I agree -- he had OK talent, but his versitility and spirit were a big plus. The problem is apparently we have a third catcher (Chavez? I don't remember his name) that's out of options -- and a good prospect. We have to keep him at the major league level, or we'll loose him to waivers. The Astros have to make a decision on what to do with him, and the article left the impression a trade is a posibility. Since the Astros are planning on resting Bagwell more, and using him as the DH where possible (to go easy on his shoulder) I can deffinitely see the Astros keeping three catchers and subbing one in at first.
It seems the other player optioned was Jason Lane. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-astrosmoves&prov=ap&type=lgns
Chavez is out of options, however, since he is 30 years old, he would not be considered a 'prospect'. The Astros do like him and would like to keep him as a backup catcher. None of the 3 current catchers (Ausmus, Zaun, Chavez) are 1st basemen. If Bagwell rests at first, look for Merced to start in his place.
Lane won't be gone long. If Hidalgo stays hurt he won't produce and Lane will be back by late April. Likewise Bidge. If he doesn't get the bat going and struggles at all in the field, he's on the pine by May 1st and Lane is back and playing center along with Hunter. IMO
I agree...I want Hidalgo to suceed, but he hasn't been able to live up to his $$$... I like Lane and I think he'll do a good job filling in... but I'm not sure he's the answer either...
Why do they care about Chavez? He is 30 years old and we already have two catchers ahead of him. Plus, they have a young prospect, Buck, who is going to play AAA this year. Just send Chavez down and lose him to waivers if someone picks him up.
