No. I just don't want to make a mistake and end up with a 1.0 GPA.

I have a philosophy degree (also a EE, so I wasn't completely bumming out), and I will tell you that the subject matter is fascinating.

The problem is that the people that take these classes generally SUCK. So you have to deal with rambling crazy folks in class discussions. Make sure you can deal with that.

The question is do you need it? And how are the professors that teach it. If "Rate my professors" has generally good reviews than go for it (although take the reviews with a grain of salt) Use it to assess the general theme of a professor, meaning if a professor has a lot of negative reviews then the class material is generally hard and requires discipline. The bad reviews come from lazy students who don't want to put in effort and want the professor to spoon feed them information.

Look for reviews that say stuff like the class is easy if you put in the time, or "the professor is fair", and glowing reviews are good too!

Your focus should be to take classes that pad your GPA, meaning avoid "Harder" classes until you feel that you have the discipline to take them.

If you need it, take it. If not, don't take it. For my degree, it required me to take two Phil courses.

If it fits your schedule and is required? Yes.

If its too early in the AM or late in the PM, and isn't required? No.

Follow the above formula from now on when choosing your classes. And always try to never schedule class after 3:00 PM or on Fridays. You won't regret it. I hated that it took me 2.5 years to figure that out.

Look up profs on rate my prof. If you can find a decently rated one, take it. Like krosfyah said, it can be interesting but also hard depending on the professor. I was lucky enough to have a couple of pretty good professors for a couple of philosophy classes that I took.

If you are interested in it, buy yourself an overview book about it. I did attend some university classes in philosophy in Germany and was bored to death, and everyone there seemed like complete idiots to me.

IIRC, Philosophy is basically a Core elective. There are several classes you can take to satisfy the Humanites/Arts part of the Core Curriculum and Philosophy is one of them.

I took it (during a summer session I think) and really enjoyed it. I got an A.

I think the real question is whether YOU think you will enjoy it or not. If you do, take it. If you don't, see if there's another class that will satisfy the requirement that you might like more. We can't tell you if you'll like it or not.

I really really enjoyed sociology as a class. That one really changed my thinking. I'd recommend that one over philosophy.

I just took a philosophy class this past semester. Philosophy of Human person. Was added to my required courses when I changed universities, and i have to take metaphysics now this fall. I had a very easy professor. Basically I didn't have to really learn the material, just memorize short essays to recall for the test. I wasn't too into the class, but I took away a few key things. It forces you to think about your existence, your way of thinking, knowledge, etc.

I'm guessing you're going to be a freshmen in the fall right? If you're really having doubts about it, you don't have to take it your first semester. Find out more from your peers and people taking the class during this next semester and find the right professor for you. Sometimes you can even sit in a class you're not enrolled in and see if you like it. Especially with philosophy- the professor makes all the difference- whether it's goin to be life changing or the worst class of your life.

Ratemyprof.com is amazing. I don't sign up for courses without looking at that.

Pro: I lot of attractive females took my philosophy class.

Con: It was an 8AM class and way too far away from my dorm.

I dropped it first week because, y'know... yolo.

I would sign up for it and see if you like it; if not, just drop it within that first week (or the allowable time) and sign up for something else. It wont count against your gpa or financial aid.

I know since I was an engineering major ,there were precious few opportunities to take classes out side of the core curriculum. So I never took what I was supposed to. Instead of the traditional history elective, I took History of Sports; Instead of public speaking, I took Interpersonal Relationships; Instead of another Traditional elective I took Inro to Cinema. If they are going to take my money at least ill take something fun that still satisfy the requirements.

    You WHAT?!?!?

Is that like ClutchFans' "rep" version?

I liked Sociology as well, but Philosophy: Moral Issues & Personal Preferences was much better. Also, I took Ancient Philosophy (works of Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, etc.), and Ethics. Those last two challenged the iSht out of me. But now I really know to stay out of the D&D.

I would take Sociology if I didn't already satisfy the Social Sciences requirement from AP credits. Will it count as an elective in this case?
