Okay, I graduated with a computer science degree in May of 2002, and have been unable to find a full time job that is in any way related to my major. I know there exist many certifications that a technical minded job seeker can obtain, and they will help him. My problem is that I don't know what most of them are, or which ones will be best helping me land a job. As far as what I am looking for...well, really anything in the computer industry. I could do IT, programming, you name it. I just want to get SOME position so I can have a job and get a better idea of what I want to be doing with my life. I think certifications can help there.

So, does anyone have any suggestions?

I was in the same boat as you a couple of years ago. I graduated with a MIS degree and couldn't find any decent jobs. I busted my as and earned a MCSA certification and still can't find jack. Certs don't mean $hit unless you get some good experience behind them. I've given up and am now going to go for my Masters.

Dell has been hiring quite a few entry level positions recently. I have had several students who've taken jobs with them (of course you have to move to Austin). They don't require an MIS degree but they did prefer MCSEs. The pay was around $18 per hour.

Raven - that sucks man, good luck in getting a JOB.

I'm in the field, have been since 1997 or so, same year I graduated high school.

#1 in importance is experience for most places. I don't have a college degree and I am only a MCP, but I make well over 25$hr as a Network Admin. I would suggest getting something on the bottom and just LEARN everything you can. Get some junk PC's and load them up and just play around. I worked in desktop support for a while to get my feet wet and then started moving up.

Certifications are good to have, if I wasn't a MCP I wouldn't have gotten in the door at some places. Your degree will probably get you an interview, but most places won't hire you at a mid level position if you don't have experience. It sucks. So if you can pass one test and get your MCP that's about all I would do.

Thanks for the advice, Sonny. I really don't have a problem starting from the very bottom...but for whatever reason I have had difficulty even getting interviews for positions like that. That's why I was asking about the certifications.
