This is just another reason why I feel like a good play would be to use one of DMO/TJones to move up high and select a young big with more years to develop and possibly even higher potential (Cody Zeller), while at the same time clearing cap space for Dwight.
Not if he is under contract with another FIBA team. Is it true that Giannis is currently a free agent in Europe? If that's true, then you're right. But if he is under contract with his Greece team, he must get released from that before he can sign an NBA contract.
Using TJones or DMo to get Zeller would not clear any cap space in fact we would lose cap space. Dmo makes 1.4 mil next year and Jones makes 1.5. the 11th pick in the draft makes over 2 mil his first year.
No, they also have to do a tender to second round picks, but for only the minimum wage...so, negligible. However, in either case, if the player is under contract for a FIBA team, all bets are off. NBA teams do not have to offer a contract to maintain draft rights. That's called stashing the player. Is Giannis a FIBA free agent right now?

Because we need to keep salary low. We are trading Robinson to go after Howard. We need a draft pick that will play in Europe this season.
because if we stash them in Europe for a year, they don't count against the cap, and we need the cap room to offer Dwight the max.
wow a guy with enormous potential comes along Adetokunbo...and you just sigh , if we could only release Royce White who hasn't played a single game. The thing is if this guy wouldn't want to play with RGV or in Europe, then, well, there goes Houston's chance? But looks like this guy needs two more years just to gain more experience, and muscle on on his lower body. You need to be NBA ready to be able to play 82 games and grind it out for the whole season.
The goal is to not take on salary (it hurt our salary cap space). If we can keep a player for a year or two in Europe he won't mess with our plans to sign Dwight Howard.
So, what's the hoopla. We can't sign him until he's free of that contract, so therefore, he doesn't count against our cap...he's effectively being stashed until he can get a release from FIBA. I'm pretty sure we don't even need to offer the Required Tender, because he is not allowed to sign it, until Spain frees him.
You can buy someone out of that Spanish contract. It would cost around 1.5 mil to buy Giannis out of his contract. This is what Giannis wants the team who drafts him to do. I guess the team that drafts him could just ignore his wishes and tell him to screw off.
Adrian Wojnarowski @WojYahooNBA 24m Oklahoma City has to be frightening Atlanta with threat of selecting Greece's Giannis Adetokunbo at No. 12. Hawks have long wanted him.
