There are things that I want to torrent, but I am pretty certain it is illegal. Some people say that it isn't illegal and that you won't get in trouble. They say that only the distributor will get in trouble.

So does anyone here want to explain if it really is illegal, and how safe it is?

    Thanks.

Are you not worried about the possible legal trouble?

It's not illegal unless you download something copyrighted. I've used to to download trailers and shareware... public domain items ;)

Do you use a private torrent site? If not, why download a torrent instead of finding a direct source?

You get 6 strikes from your internet provider, once you exceed those 6 strikes you're out and headed to jail for life

It's faster sometimes and easier to find. For example, I tried to get Ubuntu directly but it took forever. The torrent is spread out through multi users and is much faster.

    Torrenting is fine.

Make sure to use proxies/ VPN so your IP can't be tracked though.

I'm pretty certain the vast majority of people who torrent are downloading something copyrighted...

I use Waffles a lot but What.CD is much better. I also use PtP and Teh Connection for Blueray rips and send them to the TV via Roku. I've never had a letter from my carrier in the 9 years I've been doing this, and I download A LOT. I just wouldn't torrent anything that's not on a private tracker. Not worth it imo.

Torrenting is probably one of the riskier things you can do in terms of copyright. Your IP is exposed to everyone using that tracker and the people seeding it are probably doing it on purpose to catch your IPs.

I am speaking from experience/dealing with a lawsuit after getting "caught" torrenting.

Torrenting copyrighted material that you haven't purchased is illegal.

There is always a chance you can get in legal trouble. Most likely, your ISP will tell you to stop and eventually suspend your service.

They might send you an email that you'd downloaded something copyrighted but that's as far as they'll take it. They might ask you to pay a certain amount of money to settle the case but in reality, they're just trying to see if you'll take the bait.
