You need mid-range jumper to diversify your offense scheme. 3 or drive is too predictable to a good defensive team.

It all depends on who is taking the shot. Big men who can shoot the mid-range jumper, e.g. Bosh, Aldridge, Gasol bros, etc. , spread the floor and open the paint for easy layups.

Sure it would be great if these guys can hit consistently from behind the arc ... But how many guys are Nowitzki, Ryan Anderson, Kevin Love in the league ? Not many, and most of them are terrible defenders.

So, a mid range jump shooting big man is what is more easily available.

The open shot is the most effective, no matter where it comes from (in the paint, midrange or 3pt line). Ball movement is key to prevent stickiness, but guys moving to open spots and passes hitting them when they are open is just as important.

Disagree. You need a post player for offensive diversity. Mid-range jumpshots aren't necessary.

I hope you get to fill the first page with your threads. But in order to do that, you need to do two per hour instead of two per day

    Go go go!

Interesting that you brought Popovich up. Most people would assume that the Spurs take alot of mid-range shots simply based of the fact Parker is known for being a mid-range sniper, and Duncan is often positioned at the elbow, but the Spurs actually rank 24th in shot attempts from 16-23 feet. If Duncan and Parker were very good 3pt shooters, Spurs might rank even closer to 30th.

Like I said in the article, some teams have to play a certain way because of their personnel. If guys like David Lee could shoot 3's, I'm pretty sure he would be taking less mid-range shots.

I don't think it's a coincidence that Patterson averaged less mid-range shots after he extended his range to the 3pt line over the off-season.

    2011-12: 4.3 shots 10-23 feet and zero 3's
    2012-13: 3 shots 10-23 feet and two 3's

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the number of mid-range shots should be zero. I think that if you're wide open you should take that shot, but chances are you're going to be open alot more often at the 3pt line simply because it's further away from the paint. Defenses are often packing the paint, and the easiest way to punish them for that is by making it rain from outside.

Here's an example of "packing the paint".
A pass to David Lee there wouldn't result in an open shot, but a pass to one of the 3pt shooters could have (otherwise continue to dribble drive until a more open shot is created--a la the Rockets offense).

The fact the Warriors lost David Lee in the playoffs and didn't lose a beat is a testament to our philosophy. Harrison Barnes ability to shoot 3's completely transformed the floor spacing on that team, and as a result we saw the Warriors very arguably overachieve in the playoffs as Steph Curry got in and out of the lane at will while 3's rained from the sky.

We score at the rim and from behind the arc. While we have the players that will can the threes (and are probably soon to lose 2 of the best in Delfino and Garcia, although I hope not), and have guys like Harden and Parsons who are great at driving to the basket and scoring, Asik's major flaw since he's been here, in my opinion, is catching the pass around the basket. We've all seen him do it, fumbling the pass from Harden, Lin, Parsons, etc., and have all groaned when it happened. The elite ability to make that play and score is one of the most important things Howard will bring to the Rocks if he signs on the dotted line.

I'm drooling at the mere thought of seeing him make that play. So are the passers in our offense, who would immediately see their assist numbers rise. I would love to keep Asik. I hope we do. Having both would be incredible, but having Howard's hands catching those passes would have me dancing in front of my TV.

Nice job, OP. Yes, I like our offensive philosophy. It just needs some tweaking. Howard does that all by himself.
