Well absolutely you would. That wasn't the question though.

This argument is pointless. I understand your point, you don't understand mine. That's cool.

Anyway, I would encourage you to get to a point in your life and worldview where you don't decide that anyone who doesn't reach the same conclusions that you do must be uneducated.

It is only a pointless conversation because you view it that way.

No it's pointless because I'm not really interested in trying to convince you of something. I'm defending a very minor, nuanced argument position that I don't benefit from. That makes it pointless.

You are entitled to your opinion but I disagree.

Perhaps somebody who holds some of the opinions that I have challenged might be curious about the reasoning behind my responses and be encouraged to do his/her own research.

The chance that that will happen makes this discussion far from pointless imho

There is one huge flaw in this argument is that we have no way of knowing how things in North America and Africa would've turned out without slavery. If slavery never happened it's possible that Africa has a first world standard of living and North America third world.

And yes this argument is whitewashing slavery since it is basically an ends justify the means argument.

It's no less silly than the slavery argument but I'm not going to make it because I find these arguments sickening.

I already said, in the post you quoted, that there is a counter argument that it would be better today or that the person could migrate here voluntarily, etc.

No it isn't. It's only "ends justify the means" if you say it was worth it. The ends don't justify the means, but the ends do still exist.

My issue with the ends is that it seems to focus solely on current standard of living. It doesn't focus on a loss of identity, loss of culture and heritage, loss of family structure and history, or any other negative aspects of the ends.

A few idiots make nasty tweets, FB posts, etc. about this kid and suddenly it's a national discussion -- I think his parents pushed the issue in the media to promote his career.

I think a mistake that's made in these types of discussions is that we often assume wealth is the measure of whether someone is better or worse off. In some ways, Africans live happy and contented lives in ways that many in America don't. They might not be materially better off, but in terms of self-rated happiness, it can be a different story.

Those descendants of slaves may not have an iPod or internet access or as good an education had they remained in Africa, but they might be much closer to their neighbors, may have a proud family history, not be discriminated against when looking for jobs, etc.

Calling me ignorant...I figured it wouldn't be long before you had to resort to insults since you couldn't defend yourself.

I denounced African slavery. It was an atrocity. Period, full stop.

Separate issue: You never spent any time laying in excrement on a boat. Would you rather be in Africa now, or living in the top 5% of worldwide income in the US?

I wish it was an adult who can actually sing do it. Someone who has worked on their craft with a developed voice. No offense to kids but they generally suck if you don't grade them on a curve.

It makes me sick that fellow Mexicans are standing up for this kid. How would Mexicans feel if someone sang the Mexican National anthem at Estadio Azteca dressed as Uncle Sam? Yea, they would be making an uproar on Twitter as well. In my eyes, the issue here is not the kids race, but what he wore. That Mariachi outfit is an utter disrespect to America.

I think part of what makes America the place it is, are the traditions that immigrant populations brought with them. So in reality that outfit represents part of what made this country as great as it is.

Completely agree. From now on everyone who sings the national anthem should dress like this:

I don't think Mariachis had a whole lot to do with the greatness of America. ;)

Did he wear the same outfit twice ? Should have changed it up .

They could have got Selena Gomez to sing, she's from around the area too

I don't think the symbolism of the outfit that upsets people are just Mariachis. I think they saw it as a symbol of a culture.
