I wonder how they will animate Smaug speaking. Whenever I've seen other movies with talking dragons, it's always looked stupid.
[ultranerd] he could have been....legolas is the son of Thranduil, the Elven king of Mirkwood. [/ultranerd]
That's why I'll be OK with it, because of what you pointed out, and because I like the actor playing him. Still...
I thought I read somewhere that they were including material from other books that supposedly happened simultaneously. Some of which would answer questions like where Gandalf was after he left the group.
I'll give it a go but not expecting much. The first one felt average. Never read the books but know enough to know that The Hobbit is a kid's adventure. I would have liked Jackson to have taken that approach but it felt like he was trying to emulate LOTR too much. When you've just watched a trio of films to save Middle Earth, reclaiming your homeland and gold from a dragon seems mild in comparison. End result felt a bit inconsistent. Trailer looks pretty good, but how much of the movie will advance the story and how much will be filler.
Yes. They are including material that was referred to in The Fellowship of the Ring and also in the appendices of LOTR and from other works of Tolkien.
This actually looks good. But because the last one sucked ass and I don't appreciate the WB/Jackson money grab I will wait till Redbox.
She looks like a female Link from Legend of Zelda... <a target='_blank' title='ImageShack - Image And Video Hosting' href='http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/441/linkartwork1twilightpri.png/'><img src='http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/4982/linkartwork1twilightpri.png' border='0'/></a><br>
I believe they combined the Hobbit with some backstory from the Silmarillion, thus the Radagast the brown inclusion and possibly Legolas etc. Any chance I can get to revisit that world with Peter Jackson directing is fine by me. DD
Arent all movies money grabs? Why make a movie if its not going to make a profit? Anyway I'm stoked for this. Will definitely watch.
I'll overall enjoy the movie, but success always seems to bring out a director's faults. I like Spielberg, but he can be a little ersatz or saccharine. I liked the Wachowskis but their ponderous philosophizing actually made their characters less interesting, even cardboard-ish. Peter Jackson? More, more, more! Remember King Kong? Why have five dinosaurs when you can have fifty? Why run from just the fifty when you can add Raptor-type dinosaurs chasing you? More more more! Why have Kong fight one T-Rex when he can fight three? How about a cavern with big bugs? How about drawing the running time out to three hours and have the first hour nothing but a focus on the one-note characters that you're just gonna kill off anyway when you ramp the action up to 21 on a 10 scale? More more more! And so "The Hobbit". The trailer already indicates lots of filler, same as last movie. In this case, taking the chapter of the Elves and pumping it up to probably fill 45 minutes. Lots of oversimplified, overstarched noble dialogue. On the plus side, the cinematography is awesome and so will be the 3-D. I guess I'm saying it's a shame del Toro didn't stick around to direct. Would've been better.
LEGO version of the trailer. Any time an adaptation of something happens, there's just naturally going to be discussion about the quality of the adaptation. Nothing wrong with that. I did enjoy the first movie well enough myself. I've read the book, but I'm not super-passionate about it and I don't remember it that well, so I really don't care if they changed some stuff. I will say it's relevant criticism though, to say that it's entirely possible these movies might've been better if they'd left it at two movies. The first movie seemed a little slower than it needed to be, IMO. All that said, I'm still looking forward to this second one and I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
They combined the Hobbit with the backstory from the appendices in LoTR. PJ does not have the rights to the Silmarillion.
