Would it take any of the savor out of winning more titles if the Rockets went all SuperFriends?

?

Would you enjoy a Rockets title less if they had to sign on 3 superstars to do it?

It would be nice to have a david vs goliath story, but come on now, it's not realistic.

I understand the concept of rooting for players that you feel a connection towards. I really do. It's obviously easier to say that rooting for underdogs is more rewarding.....there's a reason why the NCAA Tournament is so popular. However, given Houston's track record in terms of putting a champion out on the field/court, at this point, I honestly would LOVE to be the team that everybody despises. It would feel wonderful to have a "Heat Check"-type tracker on ESPN, or be the headliners on SI.com consistently. We'd have to deal with bandwagoners, but so what?? It's not going to take away from that feeling any less when that parade rolls through our city. Not for me anyways.

A 14-68 record in '82-'83 got us Ralph Sampson. A 29-53 record the next season, and some luck, gave us Olajuwon. We then went on to make the playoffs 8 of the next 9 seasons, including a Finals appearance and 2 Western Conference semifinals before the championships. The one season we didn't make the playoffs, we were 42-40, despite Dream missing the last dozen games and a coaching change. None of those seasons saw us with "bad teams." Sure, we had several first round exits, but not every season, and more to the point, we did make the playoffs. Many teams during those years didn't. What I think a lot of people forget is just how miserable we were those two seasons before Sampson, which is why I pointed them out. If we can bypass seasons like that, and so far under Morey we have, and come up with not only with one superstar caliber player, but possibly two, then the guy is a freakin' genius. Folks think "tanking" is the way to go? Well, try going through 14-68 and 29-53. Sure, we got the best two big men available in the draft both times, but it was luck. We could have been stuck with a Sam Bowie, and/or not won the coin tosses.

Our luck was so astounding that the league changed the way the draft was run, instituting the lottery. Yeah, we caused that, and I would bet money that had the Lakers or the Knicks possessed our luck, the draft would have continued the way it was, at least for a few more years. Teams in cities like Houston have to either have brilliant GM's, rediculous good fortune, which is rare, or both. I like the way Morey is going about building a team and I won't feel the least bit sorry to win a championship his way. It sure as hell beats the alternatives. Suckage without knowing for sure where we will fall in the draft lottery. And assuming we hang on to players like Chandler Parsons, we'll still have players we brought along the old fashioned way. That's something to cling to. You just need more to be a contender now.

Why is it more rewarding to draft a player than to sign one?

I think this is a good point. The player collusion involved to make the Miami Superfriends is a pretty big part of the unsavoriness of the whole thing. They timed their free agencies so they could do this. No other Big 3 has been formed this way so far as I know. Even if Paul, Howard and Harden are deciding to team up right now as they watch the Finals, it's more opportunistic than contrived, and somehow that makes it more palatable.

I would like to see the same people on this very bbs who went crazy and claimed they would stop watching the NBA when Wade, James, and Bosh joined together.... I'd like to see if those same people would be outraged if Dwight, Harden, and CP3 joined together in Houston.

As always, yes I'd be sadden at bit,
and for a short time. But I will get over it
and enjoy the change and wins.

But don't get me wrong, if I had a vote,
I'd vote against what those three guys did in Miami.

Didn't the 3 friends in Miami get together the year before and say hey lets all play together? Dont think thats whats happening here. IF that happens its primarily arranged by Morey not by the players themselves.

Just have the best 6 players in the league join up and rotate to a new team every year. Then everyone gets a title.

I do believe San Antonio has had there own big three/collection of super friends.....and have for awhile.

    Parker
    Ginolbli
    Duncan

Like I said for awhile now (how many championships again) .

So the answer to your question.

No, we are just catching up and falling inline.

Everyone would pick my Rockets on NBA 2K and get pissed that I picked them so yeah I wouldn't like it. Too many bandwagon people acting like they actually like them when they just want the ups without the downs.

It depends though - if we get CP3 and Howard by swinging mad deals, that's cool. If they hold a press conference to announce that they're uniting to win because it's too hard to stick up for their old team - that's not so cool. If they continue by saying they're going to win 'not 1, not 2, not 3....' we have dropped off of the coolness scale into heat territory.

This is a brilliant idea. They are all mercenaries anyway. Who cares where they play. Some people are bound to be happy. :p
