Saying "Lower Westheimer" doesn't exist is just stupid. OK, so it isn't an official city neighborhood, but it is a very good way to describe an area. And "Neartown" is a freaking area, with a Neartown Association of business since 1963. It's not new, either. Get off your high horse. Is the author like 21 yrs old from HSPVA. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neartown_Houston Again, just because it isn't an official neighborhood name doesn't mean the City, Government and Businesses don't consider it so. author is a wee bit anal. But, yeah, I do hate stuff like EaDo and SoDo. In Boulder it's, SoBo and NoBo.
also, I'm pretty sure "Chinatown" is a fake name for a neighborhood, too, so everyone please stop using it.
1. I laugh at the author's assumption that the names he knows are 'real.' All names are made up, and gain legitimacy through use. If everyone calls a hood EaDo, then by God it is EaDo, no matter how stupid it is. There's nothing more fake about it than any other name. 2. I'm disappointed that Museum District East didn't get a mention. Also, Uptown and Midtown are as made up as any of the ones listed. Where are they? 3. Houston is very short on both history and geography. When you have a town that's called La Roche sur Yonne that was built on a rock next to the Yonne river 1500 years ago, you have a gravity to that name based in both history and geography. If you take an expanse of flat land with no discernable geographic markers and subdivide it into rectangular parcels and move a couple million people into it over 60 years, how is one name winning over another anything more than chance?
This I wish I could knock some sense into the author. And personally I love EaDo and so does most of the people in that area.
The problem with EaDo is people may not understand what youre saying. They could be hearing Itto, Eato, etc..but yeah, they're all made up at some point.
Uptown and Midtown are pretty defined areas. I don't even live in Houston and I know exactly where they are
