hey, jammie, when you don't mention who shot, we can assume it was the ballhandler, correct? Would you mind keeping this is one thread, so we have an easy archive search to find these stats? thx for the stats!
I thought about doing that myself tonight. I hate it when Mobley does it. It seems like most of the time he just plays with the ball for 15 seconds then settles for a jump shot from just inside the 3 point line. ------------------ "Play that funky music white boy." Six West Texansnet.com
Cougar...do it. It is supposed to be a slow play, otherwise the double team will never form. If Mobley doesn't get double teamed and his defender steps back to stop the drive, he must shoot. If he can't make that shot at a good rate when the defenders backs away, then he isn't a good enough one on one player to warrant running that play, and Rudy should stop calling 2 shakes. I just think it is worthwhile to measure it like it is a box score stat, so we can intelligently measure his one on one ability. So far it looks like the league is making him prove he can beat one on one's first, before they start with the double teams again.
I counted the sucess rate for ISOs again last night. I really noticed the "Mo shakes" play last night. Francis sets up in the standard ISO position just outside the 3 pt line. Taylor set a pick for Francis on the srong side just outside the low post area. Francis throws the ball to Taylor, runs around Taylor's pick and gets the ball back. Taylor then drifts back out to where Francis started from and Francis throws Taylor the ball. Then Francis clears out of the strong side, taking his man with him and leaving Taylor isolated. This was run 5 times last night (once in 1Q, thrice in 3Q and once in 4Q). Now for the tallies: Francis: 0 for 4 missed shot 11:20 remaining 2Q anderson missed 3 ptr 0:15 3Q * missed jumper 10:40 4Q missed jumper 3:35 4Q # * (nice pass out of a double team to an open Shandon who misses a 3) # (we get the ball back after the clippers go over the back on the rebound) Mobley: 1 for 9 turnover (steal) 8:20 2Q made jumper 8:00 2Q missed jumper 7:30 2Q missed jumper 6:05 2Q missed layup 0:30 3Q missed 3ptr 11:05 4Q ** turnover (24 sec vio) 8:20 4Q *** missed jumper 6:50 4Q anderson missed 3 ptr 3:30 4Q **** ** (double teamed, passed around, ends up as a scramble, cat misses a 3 with 2 sec on the 24) *** (mobley with ball, shandon starts out on strong side low post, no pass, so shandon clears out, leaving Cat isolated, cat starts his move, shandon's man doubleteams, cat passes to shandon, back to cat, cats layup blocked, shot clock expires) **** (cat gets doubleteamed, passes to a wide open anderson who misses a 3) Mo Tay: 1 for 5 missed jumper 8:12 1Q missed jumper 10:45 3Q williams missed 3 ptr 9:40 3Q ***** made jumper 3:07 3Q missed jumper 0:45 4Q *****(pass out of doubleteam to open wizard who missed a 3) An ISO results in a made shot, a missed shot, a turnover, or a reset (eg kick ball, floor foul). A missed shot is a missed shot no matter who gets the rebound.
jamcracker, I'm interested in seeing the breakdown too. Share with all of us. Thanks for doing the homework, BTW. This is the kind of stuff that really makes this board unique. ------------------
If you could quantify our success on particular plays it would make a nice little report/graphic for the front page. It would be relatively harmless to the Rocks, but of interest to the surfers. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
guess i just needed a little love *sniff* *whine* *sniff* (edited 11/10/00 to count floor fouls as successes) ISOmetrics 11/5/00 at Suns Rocket ISOs: 7 for 15 (46.7%) One of the problems with the way I've been keeping track of these ISOs is that I end up counting called ISOs (where Rudy stands up and shouts it out, say) along with ISOs that are a reaction to the defense. Sometimes Rudy stands up and calls an ISO play for Francis or Mobley, and that's it, the only action is the ISO. Other times, like in the play I called "Mo shakes", we set picks, have ball movement, and we have other options. If Francis doesn't get double teamed coming around Mo's pick, Francis takes the ball to the rim. Maybe there are more options I missed (some weakside movement eg). The play is set up to try a couple of options, and be set up to clear out with time on the shot clock to try out the Mo ISO. The defense presumably covers the other options well enough that we're "forced into" the Mo ISO. Maybe that's part of Rudy's "motion offense": we try some movement out, and we set up so we have the ISO as a safety net. You have to leave enough time on the shot clock to have an effective ISO (7 or 8 seconds?). Maybe one failing of the ISO safety net is that we don't spend enough time trying out the motion part. Sometimes Cat just doesn't wanna pass the ball, so he sort of pretends to try out the motion, all the while planning to end up in an ISO. That's part of the reason we have too many ISOs: Mobley, Francis aren't giving the other options a fair chance. Mobley, Francis sometimes keep the ball because they want it, rather than giving rudyball a fair shake. I've been lumping all the called ISOs with the "reaction to defense" (aka "selfish guards") ISOs. I'm hoping the ISOs Rudy calls, he calls for a reason (a defensive matchup eg), so the ones he calls should be more successful than the "selfish guard" ISOs. So, maybe I should keep track of them separately. I haven't been, but I'll try to start. I didn't tape the Suns game, but I did watch it all. I was less than religious about recording exactly who took each shot. (I might have a couple down with no shooter listed where I just forgot to note the shooter.) The stats: (ive been typing "10:00 1Q", meaning the play happened with 10 min remaining in the 1st quarter. i dont like typing capital Qs, so, itll just be "10:00 1" from now on.) Francis: 3 for 10 shandon got floor fouled 7:20 1 (success) shandon missed 3 2:00 1 missed jumper 0:20 1 missed jumper 4:00 2 bullard? miss 2:05 2 turnover (carry vio) 0:05 2* shooting foul 3:10 3 (made shot/success) made layup (!) 2:00 3 missed jumper 7:30 4 turnover dribbling 3:50 4** *should have been the last play in the half **had a very hard time reading my handwriting for this one, take a grain of salt Mobley: 3 for 5 floor foul 9:10 2 (success) shooting foul 9:00 2 [he tried again] missed shot 1:25 2* shooting foul 0:55 2 missed layup 5:50 4 *my buddy said this one was a busted play/scramble iso - id say it was a selfish guard iso. even so, if you count that one as a busted play/reset and not as a failed ISO, Cat was 2/3 on ISOs. Of course, rudy didnt give him too many because of his poor performance (1 for 9 !!) against the clips. Mo: 0 for 1 Shandon missed jumper 10:35 1* *not a "mo shakes"; a pure mo ISO all the way Moochie: 1 for 1 ! Cat slam ! 8:50 4 For a total OF: 7 for 15 (46.7%) [This message has been edited by jamcracker (edited November 10, 2000).]
hp - correct. If I didn't list the shooter, then the isolated player took the shot. I kept the stats for last nights Suns game too. Maybe I'll just email them to hp...
J.C., HeyPee is not the only one that appreciates your efforts tracking plays. Please post your work. I second H.P.'s suggestion to put them all in the same thread so they can be reviewed and compared. Thanks. ------------------
