Great job, Bima, as usual. I wish folks would just refer to your cap info, instead of the other "options," but anyway... I've got a question. Can we send a team more than what White would be owed for next season, the $1,719,480? In other words, in a deal, could we use the full amount we have to offer per season in cash to another team, or is it restricted to the amount owed on his contract or less? For example, can we send a future second round pick and $3,000,000 in cash we were allowed per season, the last time I checked, to a team to take this fellow off our hands? I looked into Sham Sports and didn't see an answer to that, but didn't do an extensive search. Can we bribe a team to take White?? (which is what it amounts to, of course)
Thanks for the breakdown Bimathug. Given the situation, I wonder if the team will look to trade Jeremy Lin instead. Seems that getting to the actual max for Dwight is complicated and is likely to involve another team (or two) taking on Houston's two busts and/or giving away assets like Jones, DMo or picks as either salary dumps themselves or sweeteners. Given Beverley's emergence and the salary situation, Jeremy Lin, who is actually decent, seems expendable for signing Dwight while saving other assets.
Thanks! That would mean we end up with: Lin / Bev Harden Parsons Jones / D-Mo / Smith Dwight / Asik + 2nd round pick With the minimum of 12, how are we going to fill out the roster without going over the cap?
See my sig, just negotiate Milsaps salary to allow for the max cap space. The Jazz have a ton of cap space they need to spend.
Same answer with Asik. There you could seemingly command a positive return. I hope that the FO is not precipitate with their actions before actually knowing the outcome (not the 6/30 waivers but rather player reassignments).
Yes, teams can include cash in excess of a player's salary who they want to dump. This happens a lot in the NBA and should continue under the new CBA. The Rockets have about $2.1 million remaining of their $3.1 million Maximum Annual Cash Limit for the 2012-13 season. If the Rockets decide to pull the trigger on a salary dump trade involving White before July 1, then they can offer another team up to this $2.1 million amount. (If they don't spend this $2.1 million by July 1, then they "lose" the right to use it next season, and their Maximum Annual Cash Limit will renew to a preset figure.) If the Rockets decide to wait until after July 1 to dump White (if at all), then they will have up to $3.2 million as their Maximum Annual Cash Limit for the 2013-14 season to use in such a salary dump. I see what you did there.... I'm beginning to think you're not particularly fond of Thomas Robinson or Royce White. I am fairly confident that at least one NBA team with either the cap room, the trade exception or the non-guaranteed contracts to acquire Thomas Robinson without sending back any (or much) guaranteed salary for 2013-14 would be willing to at least give up a second round pick for Robinson. This is a realistic FLOOR to Robinson's trade value. Hence, I think trading Robinson and creating additional cap space in the process is a substantial likelihood. As for White, there's no guarantee that a team will take his contract--even if it's only for one more guaranteed season that can be "stretched" over 3 years at $573k per season--just for cash. But with several NBA teams still operating in (or near) the red, the change to inject cash onto their balance sheets should be not overlooked. Also, I VERY much doubt the Rockets will consider trading Lin as a means to open up cap room for Dwight. If they are offered something of value in return (beyond the cap room)? Perhaps. But the Rockets still like Lin as a player and likely value him more than any other players who would need to be jettisoned to open up "Dwight room". The Rockets can still offer players the Room Exception ($2.652 million) and the veteran's minimum. I could see them bringing back Garcia (or maybe even someone better) for the Room Exception and adding a couple of decent players at the veteran's minimum (including possibly Brooks).
Those last 2-3 spots are already accounted for by the cap holds, right? So worst comes to worst, sign anyone off the street for the min $. More likely, use the room MLE or vet min to fill out the rest of the roster, add some back up wing players I imagine.
Wow you seriously have my my dream starting 5 in your sig right there! Thanks for clearing that up. That would be great!!
Great breakdown Bima! When I saw that projected CAP NUMBER I got a bit worried but from the info below sounds like the Rockets can do what they need to to get DH on board if he decides to come.
I didnt check the figures, but i assumed if all we needed to do was trade robinson to clear cap for dwight, then all we would need to do is trade white to clear room if the cap increased by 2.5 million. Thanks bima. We are still a few moves away from having enough for the super max.

I think the Rockets would be silly to not at least have under the table/down low conversations with other teams about Asik.... or at least listen to their counter-offers. There is good likelihood that if Howard is acquired that Asik will be traded at some point before the Summer of 2014. Its a bold move on the basketball court to think you can make Asik & Howard exist together, and Im not sure what Asik will think of going to the bench for only 15 to 20 minutes of gametime a night. I like the idea of trying to keep Asik if I can because the upside to having Asik, Howard, and making it work with the two of them work well together on the basketball court is out of this world.... but lets be realistic about those possibilities, and how much Asik or Howard would need to improve offensively for this to be possible. Putting myself in the position as an NBA GM for another team, and I know the Rockets need that cap space, why not counter-offer for Asik when they call about Thomas Robinson???
Wow, that's a huge jump in 2014. I think that increases the likelihood Morey doesn't offer Smith, Millsap, etc. a long term contract in looking forward to the 2015 free agent class.
