Why aren't the Spurs being discussed as a contender for Dwight Howard?

That's a big assumption. Most pro athletes hold on to their profession as long as they possibly can. I see no evidence that TD will be any different.

Because they want to basketball over there, not host a soap opera

Howard lacks the maturity to play for the Spurs. From Howard's perspective, however, playing for the Spurs could rehabilitate his image from immature drama queen who puts himself and his self image over the team to someone who went to the most unglamorous, but winning and team-first franchise.

^ I like this one. DHo mainly wants to be his own man who can have his own history, have a franchise that loves him more. Lakers have legacy and they treat Kobe like a king, Spurs have Duncan and Pop, who are icons of San Antonio. We have Dream, but that was a long time ago and Dream and Dwight seemed to get along well. If OKC had opening for him, Dwight wouldn't go because of small city and small town feel. We all know the history of Dwight, he has a history of flip-flopping, like a politician.

I love how Duncan is just this private/no problems player who just goes to work and shows his value on the court.
Often forgotten how good he is.

So why spurs would want one of the most selfish players in the league in their team?

Pop would absolutely love to have Howard on his team, and the Spurs offer Howard a true chance at contending for at least 1 year.

    Injuries can happen to anyone.

But in terms of guaranteed years contending for a championship - I think we offer a better deal. The Spurs will have to retool in a year, without the help of many of the people who helped put this team in place. That's a serious risk.

Why would Pop love to hav the dwightmare on his team? Dh is pretty much the opposite of TD, got his coach fired, no post moves, threw his team under d bus and has no leadership ability. Pops just let Sjax go because the dude was a distraction, im pretty sure he understands that the best team isnt necessarily the one with the most talented players.

No big name free agent has ever or will ever sign to play in San Antonio.

True. Remember when Jason Kidd could've signed there after losing to them in the Finals? He could've gotten just as much money from the Spurs(possibly more given the state income tax situation) and been all but assured of at least one championship. Instead he reupped with the Nets and that franchise went nowhere. Luckily for Kidd he did eventually get a ring elsewhere.

My dignity wouldn't have allowed me to sign with the team that just beat me in the finals. The Nets were his team.

    This.

Pop has specifically said on numerous occasions that the players he wants are ones who have "gotten over themselves". That is not Dwight Howard, IMO.

The Spurs are consistently better than the sum of their parts; there's a reason for that.

    Spurs won't pursue.

I see the Spurs going into a post-Stockton-Malone Utah-Jazz like state in a few years. Building decent teams through the draft but having a hard time holding on to players once they hit it big (Williams-Boozer).

Because they know full well that Howard's not what the media makes him to be.This guy has been in the league a while...and still not a single low post move that he can constantly go to.Poor vision on where he needs to be..Plus these injuries keep adding up.

Basically, Howard doesn't fit the Spurs culture.

Yeah, that sounds about right. Spurs got lucky that Duncan decided to stay, and that Buford thought of drafting foreigners before anyone else (Manu and Parker).

Unless their FO finds a new, untapped market for diamonds and the rough or gets really lucky (again), Spurs won't be in too great a place/

True, it is a big assumptions. But it just seems like if any aging superstar would retire at the top, Duncan would be the type to do it.

I said this last year, like most mock drafts, he was not projected to go in most mock drafts until the late teens to mid 20s (a few had him a second round pick). Now in hindsight, you can conclude that the Rockets did draft him a bit too high, he would've fallen to a team, like Atlanta or Dallas, where he would've been project player and not expected to contribute much, very early on.
