Good point, that type of adoration does seem to be a rather feminine trait ...

If LOFs were hot girls would we still dislike them?

Personally I became a fan of the Rockets durin their 95 run to their second title that year.

it's hard to like that team and only like 1 or 2 players. The Rockets taht year wouldn't win with just hakeem and Clyde alone but with Mario, Kenny, Chuckie brown, Horry, Cassell etc...

It's a coincidence that the Rockets happened to have a lot of great players like Steve Francis, Charles barkley, Yao Ming, T Mac, Scola (personal fave to me), Aaron brooks, harden, Parsons, Lin. etc...

At the same time I appreciate the city of Houston love their sports teams and their teams are part of the city's social fabric.

This made me a fan of Rockets for life and it all started with the team from 95.

It all depends on the fan. What do they value more? Do they weigh the successes of the individual player over the team in general? If so, then they just might be rooting for the player, individually.

    BUT

If they're hoping for the player to bloom, so that he can help the team win, then yes, they can be called a Rockets fan. It's at that middle of the line point, where they go "This player is more than the team." That they begin to waiver from rooting for the team as a whole.

Then again, just because they believe that their player isn't getting fair treatment or should have a fair chance in everyone's eyes, that doesn't mean that they don't want the team to succeed as well.

It really all depends, and this nonsense with looking at someone's join date and determining whether or not they're a true fan? Ballocks. I've been rooting for the Houston Rockets since Olajuwon, Cassell, Smith and Mad Max. I went to games with Cutino Mobley and Steve Franchise. I witnessed the exciting trade for T-Mac and the 1 + 2 punch with Yao Ming.

But I recently joined now, and I see some of the ridiculousness and I get lured into defending Lin because I think he deserves a fair shot. Does that make me any less of a Rockets fan? I did the same thing on other forums in defending Brooks when he got injured and lost his role to Lowry. I did the same thing for Lowry when he lost his role due to illness and Dragic. Wishing for a player to pan out because I think it may help the team, well I think that spells fan for the team for me.

It is definitely possible to be a fan of a player and still be a fan of the team. In fact, one can argue that the vast majority of fans start out like that. The problem is with the garbage who actively put the success or future of a player over the success of the team on a forum dedicated to the team and not the player. That is where a line is crossed. Advocating a player to get more minutes, touches, shots, ect at the expense of the team to develop purely for himself crosses that line. Trashing the rest of the team due to adulation of said player is ALSO crossing the line. ClutchFans is a site for Rockets and Rockets fans and anyone not in line with that needs to keep those types of thoughts to themselves or GTFO and find another forum to suck on their favorite athlete's dick 24/7.

Any lee way in that statement? Like, if players trash said player to promote their own favorite? Or trashing said player to simply incite the ire of his fans? And what's with the need to put the dick sucking thing? Why not be a fan without needing to suck said athlete's dick?

LOF's annoy me terribly, regardless of gender. I don't like any of the ones I have met so far.

as a rockets fan from the dream era, i felt that the 1999-2000 season was torture because for the most part of the decade we had been spoiled. I've never turned my back on them.
What a not so cleverly disguised lof baiting thread. =)

I never got the point of bashing one of your own players, nor being a fan of a single player and not the team. Ironically, the nba is based on fans of single players.

There is no leeway as far as I am concerned. Hater and trolls =/= Fan IMHO. A Rocket's fan is consistently looking for the team to succeed, both short term and long term if possible. Players who trash other players are a different story, but typically I do not approve of that as well. Those types of discussions should be kept private between players. I consider a team more of a hive because TEAMS win games. Players can contribute to different degrees, but ultimately it is a TEAM game.

Objective and reasonable fans of players do not suck their favorite player's dick 24/7 on a team dedicated forum. They are able to consider their favorite player's success relative to the team as well as objectively discuss the team. These "dick sucking" so-called fans are the ones that disparage coaches for not playing their favorite players or trash players who they believe take their favorite player's minutes or shots. I am talking about those types of players and no I do not necessarily mean LOF's. We went through this crap with YOF's and TOF's. LOF's are only more so annoying because Lin is not even that good a player.

Without diving into the Lin stuff implicit in this debate:

    1) If you come to be a fan of the Rockets through only liking a certain player, and then you stop being a fan when the Rockets stop having that player, then you were not a fan.
    2) That said, it's entirely possible to become a fan through only liking a certain player, and then over time become a supporter of the team regardless of your guy's presence.

Simple answer to a complicated question.

Is it ok to declare that the unfolding of one's own thread doth intrigue as well as titillate one's er.. self?

Or, is that too much like saying here that I vigorously enjoy whiffing the wafting perfumery of my very own flatulence?

Do feel perfectly free to be brutally honest with me.:)

This is ridiculous, why we have to distinguish whether the fan is team based or player based?

it is like before you are taking an scrambled egg, you are trying to figure out whether the egg was from one particular breed of hen, and with some predetermined rules that maybe a buckeye would give you better egg, thus you would take it whether the egg is fresh or not, and even it stinks already, it is still better than an fresh egg from Rhode Island red.

And to be worse than that, one would even make that judgement without really seen or knowing the hen who lay the egg, and they would have the confident by just examine the egg shell (not even care the content of it), and determine and label the egg as from Rhode Island red, thus is useless, and discard it.

I could not understand people prefer this way to make judgement, is it because they are too lazy or not trust their own judgement, why can't they depends on the content of the post to decide whether they agree with the poster or not agree with the poster, why they have to label and group people in large batches, and then decide which side they are going to take?

How many Rockets fans remain in San Diego?

If the Rockets move to Seattle, you all still consider youself as Rockets fans?

When fans buy a jersey which has player's name and number, you should call them player only fans.

Allow me to pose a hypothetical:
(I may or may not have witnessed this happen numerous times during the last series:rolleyes:)

Out of burning curiosity I go over and lurk on a certain one-player-only-fan-site.

So, what do I see there? Oh nothing! Just a horde of so-called "FANS" of the Rockets there (quite a few of whom claim to come here as well, this being the 'evil' land of racists of course), and almost all of them there are cheering for the Rockets to LOSE:eek: in their playoff games whenever their favorite player is not playing...

(along with all sorts of other things that they are cheering for or against, which go hand-in-hand with this sort of vile behavior.. and calling coach McHale various things that would make their mommas blush.)

Needless to say, I was absolutely shocked to see that. (And it was not an isolated incident, it happened every time I lurked there). Just think, some of those same guys are HERE... (shudder) makes me kinda feel like I need to go take a rape shower now.:(

Yeah those 4 whole years in San Diego really meant a ton to the people of the city.

If the Rockets moved to Seattle then that would be the team I rooted for until a new Houston franchise came around for me to learn to love.

And to your last question, I own an Olajuwon, Drexler, Horry, McGrady, Yao, Francis, Mobley and Harden jersey. Hell I even own a T-Shirt jersey with Lin on the back. The thing they all have in common is a Rockets logo on the front, which is all that Rockets fans care about.
