I'm sorry you feel that way. Anyway, I might have to check out the Black Keys. I've heard the name, just never heard their music. Thanks for the suggestion. And Francine is probably my favorite Top song. Or Blue Jean Blues. Or Jesus Just Left Chicago. Or Heard It On the X.
I was a little disappointed with their last album, Magic Potion - not up to their standard. But you can't go wrong with the rest of their discography. Try YouTubing them - I'm sure there must be a clip of "10 a.m. Automatic".
I'll even like the chicken if the sauce is not too blue. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/SUWo_nqgzok"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/SUWo_nqgzok" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
I like listening to the Black Keys but they frustrate the hell out of me. They could rock the freakin world with just a tiny upgrade in production values. It sounds like they are selling their demo tapes. They were pretty smug about it in their Chronicle interview but man, they could be the second coming. For one thing there just aren't many guys that can play and sing at that level. Put them in the studio with Little Steven. Here's the interview if you missed it: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ent/4380584.html
Never listened to their studio stuff, just saw them live twice & heard a couple of bootlegs. I can see how their style would be much more conducive to a live environment. First time I saw 'em at ACL I was just amazed that all that sound was coming from just a drummer, guitarist & vocals.
ZZ Top marathon over the last 3 hours! I felt it deserved a thread BUMP! I'd never listened to more than 1 or 2 songs before, but felt like going through their discography (winter's done, spring/summer's here and srrm's out of hibernation: the Classic Rock/Texas Blues is in full flow). The generic compliment for these guys is that it's hard to believe 3 guys sound so good & full when they play live. Apart from that, their riffs are mad fun and in keeping stuff simple and straightforward for the most part, I think they captured the feel of TX. Love me some E-G-A-sometimes D, sounds good man. My favorites so far: Got me under pressure (!), Just got paid, Sharp dressed man, La Grange, Blue jeans blues, . I still have a lot left, but I like their style. Dislike: the 80s electronica stuff - I've been skipping over those. Also didn't like "Me so stupid" too much, which is odd because I usually like this full on rock progression and bass heavy tone with the somewhat muffled overdrive solo, but it just didn't feel like the same trio.
ZZ Top is a band, kind of like Heart, that started off as one of those cool bands of the 70s that had a distict sound and were not afraid to be unique. Then the 80's came and the MTV influence threw a bunch of money at them and they kind of sucked (although I don't blame them for taking the money!). But try listening to their newest record La Fortuna. It's really good! Very old school but with a modern vibe. It won't join their classics but it's certainly worth rotation on your iPod (or whatever).
I agree! At least it put them on my map, the only other song that I can call a favorite is "La Grange" man I love that song! "Rumour spreadin' a-'round in that Texas town 'bout that shack outside La Grange".... ......... ......... .........
I saw them a couple of years ago in Las Vegas. The concert was so-so...but the crowd? It was like redneck central.
