Well he's 18 already so even if he missed a year of school I think he'd be fine. It's having that on your record that is going to kill him trying to get a job in the future.

I am talking about from the school system's perspective though. Criminal charges are out of their hands.

Disappointed with Clutchfans that no one mentioned his sister yet.

So you would perfer that he cover up his mistake and make another one by leaving school he manned up and call his parents and informed them of his mistake.

He made a mistake which is a felony. Missing class isnt a felony. Calling your mom isn't manning up.

Mistakes made involving guns are rarely overblown.

Completely irrelevant. He brought the gun on accident and not by choice. Missing class would have been a choice. Personally, I would have left.

It's obviously not irrelevant. He's been kicked out of school and charged with a felony. Keeping a shotgun in your car after using it is a choice. The gun didn't accidentally get in his truck.

You come off as one of those irrational anti-gun types who have an unfounded fear of guns.

Which do I fear more? The wiley shotgun sprouting two legs, jumping out of the truck and start shooting down all the kids in the school or some idiot on a cell phone mindless navigating traffic while holding a detail conversation?

The everyday dangers, which are often legal, far outweight the occasional incident where a kid accidentally leaves a gun in the car. Again, if you still have trouble understanding this concept, guns don't kill people. Nobody was in danger. So yes, this particular incident is certainly overblown.

The kid messed up but he doesn't deserve to have his life destroyed. Sometimes people get so caught up in the rules that they forget about the most important rule right and wrong. Its sad that so many people are quick to punish. This sick lock em up and throw away the key attitude needs to stop. Prison and permanent records should only be for real criminals not for absent minded kids.

Personally I'm sick of the casual manner in which people treat and discuss guns. A shotgun is weapon and he brought it to a school, intentionally or not. Who gets to decide "real" criminals? If he weren't a nice god fearing white kid from the country and did that in Detroit on "accident" we wouldn't even be talking about this nonsense. This is one of the reasons why there are no tolerance policies.

The fact that he was ....dumb enough to do all that instead of just ****ING TAKE A DAY OFF SCHOOL is ridiculous and may be a cause of future accidents with firearms.

I mean, he's 18, he's a senior right?...and it's what, May now? He should have already been accepted to a college and be on his Senior Slide now, barely doing work and coming to school.

The fact that he actually is someone who researched gun safety and regulations is even more mindboggling.

On the contrary, I am a gun owner and I like guns. It's just that forgetting where my gun is after using it is not something I can even contemplate. The idea that people like that are carrying weapons in their cars scares me, not because they might shoot up a school, but because such idiots have weapons.

Yup no tolerance is the answer. The kid did nothing violent. He did not endanger anybody. Sometimes common sense works. Does anybody really believe this kid deserves to have his life ruined? Race has nothing to do with this issue. Space no tolerance rules for rapists and killers not for a kid who made a mistake. This kids problem is he was too honest. Great job legal system destroy somebody's life for making an honest mistake.

Are you really serious? So I guess you are fearful of somebody breaking into his car and stealing the shotgun and going on a killing spree? Is a gun in the glove compartment of a pqwrked and locked car endangering people?
