I assembled two computers in the past two month for my home lab. Let me tell you the biggest bang for your buck first.

    DDR SDRAM: PC2700 333MHZ 512MB KINGSTON KVR333X64C25 --- $65

    Motherboard:
    (1) ASUS A7N266-VM NVIDIA nFORCE 220 Chipset with integrated GForce2 MX graphics chipset, 4xAGP, dolby digital 5.1, 10/100 ethernet, USB 1.1 --- $70

    or

    (2) LEADTEK K7NCR18G-PRO nForce2 IGP + nForce2 MCP-T chipset with integrated GForce4 MX, 8xAGP, 333MHZ front size bus, 400MHZ DDR, dolby digital 5.1, 10/100 Ethernet, USB 2.0 --- $125

    Hard Drive: 80GB 7200RPM ATA100 --- $88

DVD, CD-RW, Floppy, Case, Speakers, Keyboard, Mouse, etc. can be bought good and cheap online or from the Fry's.

You can have a sweetspot desktop for around $600. And you can buy a good 17" LCD panel for $400 from the SAM's.
