My wife and I are taking a trip to DC soon. What are some nice places to stay at that is not too far away from all the sights of the city that is a reasonable price? I'm hoping a lot of you have been and can share your experience with hotels/resorts.
I've stayed at The Fairfax at Embassy Row in DuPont Circle for 75+ nights this year for work. I recommend it.
Well, it sucks ass on the weekends when they do all the track work, but otherwise it's fine. Can't say much about the hotels, but staying in Dupont is generally a good bet. Really if you're going to be here for a few days, try to find somewhere in NW DC if you can afford it.
Agreed, it's one of the better systems in the US. I'd put it right behind MTA and CTA. Of course that's not saying much though in regards to subways in general because the US doesn't really have extensive systems like a lot of big cities internationally except for MTA.
I'm not sure about hotel prices, but like another poster mentioned, if you can find cheap hotels around Dupont Circle, Farragut, Adams Morgan....those areas should probably be your first choice. They have a proximity to all the sights are also just nice safe neighborhoods, lots of bars, restaurants, etc. Probably the next best area in DC that is somewhat safe and may be a little cheaper than the above would probably be the Chinatown area near Verizon center, or around the Metro Center station. If the above are too expensive, I'm sure if you look at areas just outside of DC like Arlington or Bethesda, you could probably find cheaper hotels. Just make sure they're near a metro stop. I've heard really cheap hotels can be found near the Crystal City metro. The area is completely dead on the weekend, but it's a very short metro ride to DC and a safe area. Also, all of the stops on the orange line in Arlington are nice walkable areas with good restaurants, and short metro rides to DC.
I stayed at the Gaylord Suites in their Convention Center in Alexandria MD, which is about 8 to 10 miles (depending on your route) from The Mall. It has nicely built boardwalk and nightlife and it's right on the Potomac. There are also malls for shopping and nice areas to walk, just in case. The interior of the hotel is impressive. I've stayed also in a Hampton Suites hotel, but that's about a 15-mile trip back to DC. Cheap, but distant.
We stayed at the Park Hyatt Washington. It was a reasonable price when we booked, it looks like it's WAY more expensive right now. We just went there this past...September maybe? The walk to the Metro wasn't to bad. We found the Metro quite clean.
The place is sort of a dump. As long as you avoid all of the political monuments, you'll be alright. Good food and whatnot.
I've stayed at the Homewood Suites twice. Within walking distance to the mall, would highly recommend it.
