No offense about the geek reference. I somewhat consider myself one too but don't have the great knowledge of all things computer.

My problem: I have a mother board (Asus p2p55d-evo). Well when I install it to my case it won't turn on. It appears to be grounding out. I will turn on for a second then turn back off, after a couple seconds it tries again and the same cycle goes on. I know it works because I remove it from the case and place it on a cardboard box and it will start normally.
I have the spacer bolts behind it and washers on the connecting screws. I even tried making little squares out of packaging tape to put on the bottom side of the board where it touches the spacing bolts. Nothing seems to work.
I did the clear CMOS but still not turning on when installed to case.

    All advice is much appreciated.

This is a new install and I have no OS installed. I don't even have the hard drives connected yet. Processor= I5

Get a big magnet and run it across your hard drive on both sides. It'll help recalibrate the electric field that is causing your computer so much trouble.

If it boots up (and you're sure it does) outside the case, then I can't think of anything else other than a grounding issue. You're using more than 1 mounting screw, right? lol.

    Sounds like a shorting issue.
Friend had a similar problem and in his case, there was a screw in the case
which was in contact with the motherboard circuits.

I am guessing it be a similar reason.
This is me guessing from the fact that it works when not in the case.

Yeah, I have seen this happen when a screw got loose and was sitting underneath the motherboard. This can very easily short out your motherboard, so I'd check that first.

Oh yeah, I don't have the back plate that goes with my mobo to install on the where the back ports are. I was figuring that it is not necessary but maybe it is. ?????

Maybe borrow another case and install it there to see if it works.
If so, then it's something to do with the case.

Sounds like your board sucks bruh. Maybe teeter it one direction while you turn it on to pinpoint where the grounding is.

I don't know what orientation is your motherboard right now and if it is to the right or to the left, but it's a smaller cable with a harness that says 12V. I believe it's at about 1:30 here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bo0pKKoCveE .

What's the model of your motherboard? I can't find a picture of the one you wrote on your OP.
