I'm with T-Mobile already, but if I'm paying $550.00 or more for a phone, I'm not getting rid of it anytime soon. But if it doesn't drop in value much and I don't lose my shirt selling it used, you may be on to something. It's something to consider. Regardless, seems like it usually takes Samsung and HTC several months to offer the latest version of Android even if your phone is "new".

You value hardware more than software. For reasons stated earlier, I have the opposite view. To each his own. IMO, "the next big thing" around the corner will probably be software. The hardware advances this year aren't all that much.

    I'm also not into rooting.

I read the whole thread and still have no idea which one I'm leaning towards. My iPhone 4 is working great, but after 3 years I'm ready for a bigger screen and I love the camera functions on the S4.

It's pretty simple. Both phones would be great upgrades over your iPhone 4. Here are the cons/trade offs to consider:
HTC One - Battery life isn't the greatest (but manageable by some accounts) and battery is non-removable; beautiful phone
Samsung S4 - Non-premium/cheap looks and feel (but very durable); has many more software features/better battery

Depends on what really matters to you.

Everyone who is concerned about look and feel should also take in to consideration that for either of them most people will put on a case and of course while this case is on, the overall look and feel of the phone will be negligible. That's how I will be looking at it at least...

Don't do it for the gimmicky things. On all Androids, the little gimmicks tend to lose their appeal quite quickly. S4's screen and camera are better. HTC One has the better user interface and exterior build. Everything else is roughly similar. See which one of those are most important to you.

I'm pretty sure the screen on the One is better. Super Amoled has flaws. The screen on the S4 is pentile also.

I wish I could put the S4's innards into an HTC One shell. Dilemma solved.

Sprint's version, The Evo 4g LTE has an SD card slot.

Every other version (The ONE X) does not.

To get to the sd card slot on the EVO, you just remove the back cover, which is the shiny plastic part around the camera.

For anyone who is worried about the "user interace" on their phone, just get Go Launcher EX and forget about the stock launcher. That's actually one of the nicer options of the Android OS in my opinion, that you're not locked into any particular launch screen UI.

I have TMobile, but I never use TouchWiz. Going onto my 4th Android phone this week, and the first thing I intend on doing is installing Go Launcher again.

Yeah, I've never used TouchWiz before (4 phones and a tablet that came stock with it), Sense on the Evo, as I remember it, was kind of nifty though.

I'm also thinking about getting a new phone, I currently have the Nexus 4 8gb version and that's just not enough memory for me.

Personally I'd lean towards the HTC One more just because it's a better lowlight performer than the GS4. I've lived this long (2 phones) w/o a microSD so it's not that big of a deal. I usually ride as naked as I can on my phone. Either a bumper or full body zagg-type like protection and HTC one is too nice to cover up all of that. I'd still get a thicker case when i do more active type activities though.

Each person is going to have different wants and needs and nicely both phones offer that but either phone I'd probably wipe off Sense or Touchwiz anyway but if i had to choose stock OS, I think i'd rather go with Sense.

Also for you cold weather people. The S4 can be used w/o special gloves. CAn the HTC One do that? not sure.

I'm personally waiting for the next Nexus phone this fall/winter. X-phone seems interesting, so I'll keep an eye on that.

I ordered the HTC One yesterday directly unlocked from HTC

I checked out both phones over the weekend and

    HTC One
    + Build Quality
    + Speakers
    + HTC Sense
    + Low light pics

    - Wish had the S4 size of screen, 5 inch with thin edges is perfect.

    Samsung S4

    + Screen size, peeerfect
    + Camera great for daylight
    + Battery

    - Build Quality
    - Speakers
    - Boring Design

The speakers did it for me. I listen to music while I work out at my home gym, while I shower etc

If HTC just used the same size screen, probably could have been the best phone ever.

I did too, but didn't receive an email order confirmation. I heard they were back order?

The site shows that the new shipment was today 4/29/2013

Did you get an email confirmation?

I have to agree with this though, my HTC One S doesn't have jellybean in the states yet, and it took a long time for Europe to get jellybean. To make things less complicated, I took the route to root.

why some folks recommend "wait for this and wait for that".... shoot, there'll always be a newer and better model coming out constantly, the OP needs a freakin phone now, not 5, 6 months later or next freakin year...
    amazing.

I've decided to go with the HTC One, but I'm on T-Mobile, and I would prefer the 64 GB version. Is the 64 GB developer version http://shopamerica.htc.com/cell-phones/productdetail.htm?prId=41599 fully compatible with T-Mobile? 4G LTE/HSPA and all? I think 32 GB might be enough for me, but it's only an extra 70 bucks for the 64 GB direct from HTC than the 32 GB from T-Mobile, and I'd much rather prefer the peace of mind.
