The Motorola X-Phone (as its rumored) is supposed to be a pure stock android phone. Not many details on it really, but I'd venture it being similar to a nexus phone since it's designed by Google.

I'm having the same problem as OP, don't know whether to go with the HTC One or S4. I don't really have time to wait 4-6 months for anything else to come out, my current phone which I've had for 2 years is quickly becoming somehow even ****tier than it already was.

I think one thing is important to mention..

While the sound quality on HTC androids is excellent, the sound level is low. If you're in a quiet place looking to watch a video alone it will do the trick, but if I had to rate the "maximum loudness" of music/videos on a phone I would say iPhones are the loudest at 10/10, Galaxies are around 8/10 while HTC's are around 4 or 5/10.

I repeat this is about loudness and NOT about quality. In terms of quality, assuming the same headphones, the HTC produces much better quality sound than others.

Aside from that, I think HTC Sense is by far the best user interface of all smartphones. The ideal phone would be an S4 with HTC Sense, only because the camera is slightly better on the Galaxy.

Of course with the S4, you have to take into account that the screen is going to be incredible.

One negative I forgot to mention about the One is the battery life isn't great. I'm not sure how good the s4 is in comparison but certainly compared to my 4s it's draining a lot quicker, although with the feed I'm probably clicking and surfing more than I was.

This is always strange to me. I've never had a phone with better battery life than my HTC One. It lasts 18 hours and I'm a heavy user (videos, social media, navigation, music, etc.)

Are you sure you don't just have a bunch of stuff running in the background which you don't need? What about widgets? Is the brightness always set to maximum? Do you have wifi/bluetooth/gps on all the time? I would check that stuff out (if you haven't already done so of course).

i am debating what to get at the moment as well. but leaning towards 5 or wait for 5S. not a big fan of the android anymore. iOS is probably the best experience for me. as far as the hardware goes, you will never get the best. so no point of getting S4 or One just for that. it's really all about the experience. but really hard for me to decide weather to get 5 and 5S though. :)

HTC one is by far the best phone I have ever used. I switched three phones in5 months. i went ffrom a iPhone 5 to the galaxy s3 to the HTC one. It's so much now polished than the galaxy. It's like a iPhone with a bigger screen.

The sound on the HTC ONE is incredible!! The "Boom Sound" as they call it is very loud and clear. With the Beats by Dre built in helps make for the best sounding phone ever made. With the speakers actually facing you instead of facing down or away from you makes such a huge difference. The S4 has a little faster processor, but you wouldn't know it when you use it. The HTC One is quite a bit snappier than the S4. I've gone back and forth on which one to go with, and I finally decided I enjoyed the experience on the One much better. Also Radio Shack is giving a $50 Google Play card with HTC One purchase by the end of May. You also get a $10 gift card to Radio Shack.

I've owned an S1, S2, Infuse and S3 (currently). I think I might pickup the HTC One over the S4 if I do get a new phone. The cheap feel of the S series really does get to me. That's about my only gripe. Is Sense still layered on the HTC or is it gone?

it is but they toned it down a lot.

IMO the HTC one is a far superior phone.

Walmart has the HTC ONE for upgrade for $149

My actual AT&T 2-yrs contract expires in Oct. for this line, but I know you can upgrade/extend your contract 5 months prior to our 2yrs (as I have upgraded the other 3 lines on my plan)

Would Walmart/Best Buy be able to upgrade/extend your contract 5 months prior to your 2yrs ... or is that only allow at an AT&T retail store?

To prevent being locked into a phone, why don't you just get Tmobile? They don't have anymore contract plans, and with the HTC ONE coming out, you can just pay it monthly. If you decide to switch to another device, you can just sell your phone and pay off your phone bills. It's not really that hard to do so right now.

To answer your question, why should the latest Android software be a factor? I'd rather have top-of-the-line hardware. Having the latest Android software shouldn't mean much, unless you're talking about a phone that has froyo or gingerbread.

I understand why you want to wait, though, and I'm not hating you for it. Literally the next big thing is possibly around the corner.

Also, why not just root your phone? It's completely safe, and you'll get more features than what you'd get from stock. You can also get Android quicker, by downloading European roms(since updates roll out in Europe faster than the US.

I don't understand why people don't do this. I thought the majority of Android users got Android phones to modify them.

I 100% agree with you. I may sound like a fanboy, but I prefer the Sense now than the AOKP **** that Samsung has on their phones. i've always hated that on Samsung phones.

Any top of the line Android phone right now is a massive upgrade from an iphone. I'm glad you made the switch.

    Correct me if i'm wrong:
On newer phones like the S3 there's a root/flash counter of some sort that trips when you do just that root/flash (not sure which or whatever). Unless there is a way to reset it, you'll be voiding the warranty

I will wait for the next pure android phone that gets updates directly from Google.

My galaxy nexus is lagging like crazy though. Sucks.

I don't know of the problem you're talking about, but if you brick your phone, a newer phone(such as an s3) should have an unbrick method if I'm not mistaken. Follow the unbrick method and you could turn it in for warranty.

But ****, totally forgot about voiding the warranty whem rooting. If you ever do want to return your phone, while it is rooted, there is a way to install the stock rom and unroot your phones with certain phones. I don't know if this'll work on other phones.
