There is no priority position upgrade. Priority #1, 2 & 3 is getting another foundation player. Filling out the roster and upgrading certain positions comes afterwards. As for Lin, while I do believe that he ultimately could develop into an above average starting PG, he clearly is below average among starting PGs as of today and I don't think he's a particular good fit next to Harden, so, no, I do not believe that Lin is the Rockets' PG of the future.

It's funny, when Harden isn't playing, Jeremy doesn't look timid at all, and went 2-2 with 22pts/7assists, and 3 of those games were against 2 of the top 6 in the league.

last time i check , current NBA champion start with an average PG and the best PG in the league never played in the final. the truth is , superstar won championship , Lin is not a superstar for sure , but you're just deceiving yourself if you think Rockets gonna win anything after replacing him with another non-superstar player. there's plenty better PG than Lin currently , but i wouldn't want any of them other than those ELITE PG , why? very simple 1. he's young with upside to improve 2. his marketing value is a huge advantage , and you will most likely able to involve him to acquire a superstar player than most of them.
Lin could be a good starting PG, but not in McHale's system with Harden. McHale has already destroyed lin's confidence by benching him because of one TO or one missed shot. To be honest, even he is healthy, he can not do too much as a SG. He is just not good as a SG, that is not his game. Next season, either Lin or McHale must go.
A point guard should fit the team he is playing for. However, no one position could ever be more important than having three or four superstars on a team. I'm not saying I'm not a Lin fan but should he be the Rockets starting point guard? Everyone says he's young he's got a lot of upside, well a lot players in this league play better than him and are not that much older for less money.
First of all, you're wrong about the abundance of PF threads. Just take a look at page 1 and find which thread is about PFs needs. Cuz, I didn't even present a standard let alone two. Thirdly, after Lin's first year as starting PG where he played all 82 games and average 15/7 PER36 at age 24, you think he's reached his ceiling? IMO I don't think Lin is a fit for the team because of the roster construction and the skillset redundancy with Harden. really because lowry didn't look very consistent on a new team that asked him to do things a little differently. You shouldn't be so one way with your "expertise' =/ He will suceed with us. On another team where he could be himself there is no doubt he could jack up 17 shots and manage 18 points but the team would be in the 30 wins range. He is perfect for what we need here. He just has to mature. I don't expect his detractors to change their minds though.
This thread is more about Lin's position and how he fits that position rather than him personally. This is not a personal attack on Jeremy Lin. Lin is more talented than our Power Fowards and I believe that there is no question that we need to upgrade. However this thread is to explore whether or not we feel the pg position would be better served with someone else.
did you read my post? i did said there's plenty players better than him now , my point is why are you impatiently want to trade away Lin after a season for another above average player who wouldn't make Rockets a contender? even if he didn't improve much next season , he's still a serviceable PG .and with his huge marketing value , he's your perfect trade chips to acquire superstar player , why would you want to waste that chips?
If you are comfortable with Jeremy Lin as a starter in the future, if you beleive that he will get better, then fine say that. But don't expect me to feel the same as you. My criteria may not be the same as yours. I think a full season is enough time to judge whether or not he is improving, will improve and whether or not I want to risk his improvement on the Rockets future. I don't want to have Jeremy Lin just for the sake of having Jeremy Lin. I want the best fit for this team and I don't think he is.
If Lin had no hope of improving and this is how he will be for the rest of his career, then you could make the argument that he is overpaid and should be shipped off for a better player. Age may matter if you're a wing player that depends on your athleticism, but for PGs, more than half the game is cerebral. You need time, experience, and confidence to be great. Lin has already shown *excellent* court vision; all he needs to do is to trust himself and stop forcing passes that aren't there. This will come with time. 2) He is athletically gifted. It's not as if he is Chris Duhon or some other scrub who cannot beat a traffic cone off the dribble. Lin is probably one of the fastest players with an excellent first step. This is a fact- Morey and experts agree that Lin is an NBA athlete. Lin has the size, quickness, and body control to be a great slashing PG. 3) He is physically TOUGH. This guy gets fouled and beat up and targeted every game and he doesn't complain once. He hits the deck as often if not more than guys like Dwayne Wade back in the day. He played through injuries and only when he literally can't lift his arm to shoot does he sit. 4) He is mentally TOUGH. Stop with the "Lin is a mental midget" talk. Yes, the entire Rockets team played scared in the first game against the Thunder. Yes, Lin can be hesitant sometimes. Lin is inexperienced and his comfort in this system will come in time. You already saw his swagger and clutchness during the Linsanity run. You already saw how he was able to drop 38 on the Spurs and then 29 on the Thunder this season on national television. People want to write this narrative about how Lin isn't mentally tough enough to play. This is not true at all; he just needs time to get comfortable as the future PG of the Rockets. 5) "Fit" is overrated. People keep arguing that Harden can't play with Lin and vice versa. People said the same thing about Wade and LBJ. When you have talent on your hands, you mold you system to fit the talent, not the other way around. You might lose a few games in the short term, but you will be that much better in the long run. Ultimately, at the wing slots you want PLAYMAKERS. Lin is absolutely a playmaker. 6) All of Lin's weaknesses are fixable. Lin's weaknesses- handles, decision making, and jumpshooting - are all things that can be worked on. It is much much much more difficult to fix somebody's court vision and impossible to teach size and quickness off the bounce. I fully expect Lin to take the next step this summer and cut down on his turnovers while upping his scoring by 2-3 points. 7) Lin's contract is very reasonable. 8M/year is an excellent contract for a young guard with potential. Playmaking wings come at such a premium these days that the moment they actually become dominant, you're going to be paying out the butt for them. Locking in a guy who has already shown flashes of dominance at 8M, which would be below market rates for someone who could play at even 80% of what Lin has shown us at times, would be a steal. 8) Lin has flashed. You don't have multiple 20 point games, drop 38 on the Spurs, and then 29 on the Thunder if you're a mediocre player. If you don't have talent, you're not going to drop 30 on a championship contending team. His consistency issues is a function of his youth.
It baffles my mind when I read other's here call Jeremy a 'great point guard' ... that's just being delusional. Glad to see other's are starting to realize that Jeremy isn't as good as we hoped he would be. Like other's have said, he'd be a solid backup PG averaging 25 minutes, preferably the 6th man. Knicks fans must be happy they didn't match our offer. Even if we wanted to trade him, nobody would want his remaining contract. 15 million in the final year of his contract? Lin is a cool guy though, probably one of the few NBA players who aren't assholes in real life.

I don't get people that want Lin gone based on his contract. He's getting paid like an average nba starting point guard. Which in my opinion he has outplayed. You do know Lin has had a better season than Dragic right? A lot of people seem to forget this. If Brooks/Beverly is your PGs next season with no significant upgrades at other positions the Rockets will only be worse. The Rockets already have enough cap space to sign a max contract so I dont see where Lin comes into play. Lin has had a solid season over the course of 82 games where as Brooks was stinking in Sacremento then has a decent quarter now all of a sudden Lin is expendible. Man some people are really knee jerky.
Good to know you attend practices and have insight in to how our coaches handle their critique of players. Oh wait.... And every analyst on national TV has been vocal in their praise of McHale and the job that he has done on the exact things that people here complain about the most: in-game adjustments. You're totally right though, our coaches don't focus on developing talent, recognizing/playing to their strengths (probably the absolutely most absurd statement you made), or trying to help them grow in to mature NBA players. By the way... our coaches changed the ENTIRE TEAM PHILOSOPHY to cater to the strength(s) of this team - and in case you haven't been watching, it ain't defense.
Concerning the table, This may not be a good way to evaluate pgs. There are plenty of pgs that do not fall under the category of averaging more assists AND more points than Lin that I consider, IMO, are better players. some examples, Kyrie Irving Mike Conley Stephen Curry Damian Lillard I didn't look and see what you're debating about in the earlier pages of the thread, so I'm not trying to agree or disagree with you on anything. It's just that table bugged me.
