First, I would not go that far. There has been a lot of protests and a sizable minority on the left in the USA that feel for the innocent civilians killed over seas, in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Second, if you think the valuation of ones one citizens over foreign citizens is some how unique to the United States, you are mistaken... Unless you mean nations that do not care about foreign citizens, nor their own citizens.

I do not advocate torturing him, and I would not rely on what a bunch of posters say on Friday night as indicative of how people really feel. Since 9-11 there has been an erosion of American idealism concerning torture, but most still are against torture.

That sounded like he made a joke to me about being on meth. He did say he smoked a lot of pot though which is normal in college.

I really doubt a meth head would be able to attend Dartmouth and escape the police the way he did.

They should read him his Miranda rights, but they won't, so they can set precedent for the future not providing Miranda rights. It is being done on purpose and it is calculated... Our rights and protections are being stripped away by the government and it should be troubling.

Not necessarily, we do not know if they believe information gathered is or is not admissible and this is a perfect situation to challenge the conventional wisdom. Make no mistake the government would love to do away with Miranda for serious cases. Ever since the days of Alberto Gonzales, we have seen our rights challenged.

I am an attorney and there are certain principles that are not compromised. You are seeing a number of Constitutional scholars and leading lawyers coming out and being very critical of the governments decision. This is very calculated.

I don't understand the need for Miranda rights anyways (although I see the point being made). Isn't it common sense that anything you say to a cop upon arrest may be used against you to try and convict you?

Maybe I don't understand the full scope of them or maybe the Miranda rights were the birth of the idiot-class American?

Speak for yourself. There are plenty of people who want to know why this happened? Was it a religious cause? Was he bullied? Took some bath salts? Smoked too much pot? He seemed like a normal dude and then suddenly he goes crazy?

Capturing this guy alive was the best possible outcome. With any luck at all, we'll get a lead on whoever helped turn these two into monsters. Congratulations to all those responsible in law inforcement, and the people of Boston and the surrounding area for enduring all this the way they have. Nothing will bring back those killed, and nothing will take away the injuries that occurred, but maybe we can get a bit of justice.

I think this is part of it,and the larger picture is whether there's anyone behind /linked the attacks.

Ok, question him, find out then put him in prison amongst the general population, that should do the trick.

I know where they come from, I just always figured it was common decency to know that things you tell the cops may be used as a confession.

Maybe some day I'll read more into it. Right now, I need sleep. Been up for about 30 hours.

Being an attorney I'm surprised you're not more familiar with it then.

The Public Safety Exception isn't something new that was just created for this case. In recent high profile situations, it was used in the cases of the Underwear Bomber (questioned for an hour without Miranda) and the (attempted) Times Square Bomber (questioned for 4 hours prior to Miranda rights). The origins of the law date back to 1984.

Also, the Public Safety Exception expires after a maximum of 48 hours, at which time he will be read his Miranda rights. This at least is according to a lawyer they had on TV last night.
