just because nothing passes in this excuse of a Senate thanks to 60-vote man doesn't exactly make it a celebration worth having. I'd rather think it a cause for dismay.

In any case, there are multiple ways through. Scalia and Kennedy are both approaching 80. 2014 is starting to shift pretty hard Democrat (even Rasmussen gave the generic Democrats a 4 point advantage.)

What, again, precludes helping the mentally ill while restricting weapons to them? I don't see the conflict. Some would argue the goals are mutually complementary and beneficial.

 

Spending all of your political capitol on restricting guns and putting no effort into helping people.

Aren't the same people who are trying hardest to oppose gun control the same people who are trying hardest to cut federal/state/local funding to help the poor, disenfranchised, ill, in need?

On the flip side, isn't Obama trying to both help these people through national health care and at the same time preventing them from obtaining weapons that can hurt themselves and others?

The Republicans are utterly incompetent on economic policy, and with de-leveraging ending, and monetary stimulus, the fiscal levers the government employs aren't as important. In any case, budgets are passed, and discussion of the economy continues, in case anyone forgot the chained CPI debate (yay Fisher Index vs the Laspeyres index, who knew the numeraire could trigger an economic civil war!)

Resolving immigration (especially with regards to the tech sector) , restricting guns, and allowing gay marriage also have very distinct economic benefits, and are hallmarks of long-term structural changes that will attract more progressive, more talented, and more educated people from around the world to the United States, in case all you care about is money, and not human lives.

It will be interesting to see where/ how the Tsarnaevs got their arsenal of weapons.
