Please keep the Vancouver fans at bay.

If they already have a guy like Rahim, why would they give him up? Remember, freeing up cap space implies that the team would have a chance to get itself in a better situation after the season's end. Here, they would be taking a risk not worth taking. Trust me, there are no free agents out there that are better than Shareef. Only Webber. But why would he jump off a sinking ship in search of the Titanic* at the bottom of the ocean?

Such a situation also implies that they would want to get rid of a player that either doesn't fit their needs, has wasted his welcome in the city, or simply needs to be traded (a la Garnett situation). Shareef doesn't fit this bill.

It's like saying "For the fun of it, let's give up Shareef to see if we can get him back next offseason."

Yeah, it sounds dumb. It is.

*Well, this actually doesn't appply 100%. The Grizzlies were never great in the first place.

o man i wanna cry. dont trade the dream. ok now i am crying, the only way u trade him is if u get somethin spectacular out of it-- this means garnett or webber nothin less than that---PERIOD. its commendable he would say somethin like that, but why? Is he in that good of shape? Retirement or trade, i along w/ any other true Rocket Fan will shed many tears. i refuse to watch him in another uniform, if he gets traded, i will never watch that team play. Even if he's injured, just seeing him sitting on the sidelines would be too much to handle. You know cryin for the rockets is not a bad thing. LET IT OUT guyz, like i did when seattle beat us in sam cassels last game, or when john stockton hit that shot to send us home -- i dint even sleep that nite -- but that was all temporary. I was lookin forward to this final year for the DREAM. But now, that day which i felt would never get here just might be closer than we all thought. [IMG]

If this is true, Dream is tarnishing his image here. First there was the near-deal with Toronto two years ago, and now this. Seems to me that he really isn't committed to the Rockets anymore. And that really hurts. I guess it hurts his fans a lot.. I know I was taken aback upon learning of the scoop. Dream needs to decide where his loyalties are. If he's in to fatten his bank account, be a man and present yourself for what you are. Don't be fraud. Hakeem has always been pretty truthful in his feelings. He comes off as a genuine person in my opinion. I think he's very trustable. But for him to make this look like he's doing this just to help out the Rockets is totally absurd. Deion Sanders makes no bones about the fact that he wants to play for whoever wants to pay him. I'd hate to see Dream end up in that boat, as a hired mercenary. Instead, he should try to be more like Dan Marino... sure both could still play and contribute (not like they used to) to some teams in the league, but Marino could not see himself in any another team's uniform... I just hope Dream has some of those same feelings within him. Guys like Hakeem, Jeff Bagwell, and Craig Biggio deserve to play out their careers in Houston. True, Bags got traded here, but his entire major league career has been spent with the Astros... and he deserves to be given the opportunity to finish up here, if chooses to do otherwise, that's his right... at least we can't blame the management for not trying this time. Trust me, I'd be the last person to say one negative thing about Dream.... but in the past he has been accused of being a bit selfish... we all stuck up for him then saying that he had to do everything for the Rockets cause we had no one around him.. then he started to trust the other players on the team more and more and Houston had its first World Champion. But now more and more, it seems like Hakeem wants to look out for number 34. So, if he is willing to come out and say in public, trade me, that's fine. But I don't move him until he does do that, otherwise you risk losing whatever loyalty you have built up over the years. Sure the Rockets and some of their fans will know what really happened, but who else will? They'll just think we shipped him out for our own greedy needs. Just like some find it hard to believe Hakeem knew about the proposed Toronto deal way before any of us knew. All Dream has to do is go out in front of the camera and say it's a shock to me, and he gets off free. Dream, take your time and make your decision. And when you do, be a man about it. And for what it's worth, I can't see you in any other team's uni. You should be a HOUSTON Rocket till the end. In closing, good luck this year... leave us wanting more, not wishing that you would have got out a year or two earlier while you still had it. Here's to a healthy, successful season to Houston's "Great One."

This is just bizarre stuff. Thanks for the scoop Clutch.

At this point I don't know who I'd trade him to, or what we could get in return that would be worth the cap space (and, losing Snandon and Mo as a result).

'sniff' 'sniff' Hakeem, we will miss you, and I'll make damn sure the Clippers get new uniforms after we trade you for Odom. It's the least I can do. [IMG]

Anyway...One question: How do you guys think this news will affect the arena vote?
    Not very well IMO.

Who are "the guys on the plane"? Is it the Rockets plane? Or is Dream giving away info to strangers on his future with the Rockets.

    Does anyone not believe DocRocket?

    Desihooper,

I have to disagree with you on this count. I likewise would love to see Hakeem end his career in Houston, and it would tear me up to see him in another uniform, especially if it was for the wrong reasons, but it sounds like Dream has Houston's interests in mind in this case. If he genuinly wants to play in Vancouver, or some other city, I don't think it is because of the money. I mean, the guy is VERY rich.

The way I see it, he knows that his style of play no longer truly fits with the Rockets offensive scheme. He has a pretty good idea that he will want to play somewhere else next season (health providing), and so he wants the Rockets to get everything they can for him now. Personally, I say don't trade him, and I think he will realize by the end of this season that he actually does want to retire, he just needs to have a couple games where he struggles breathing or has sharp pains in his knees to remind him. It would be a god-aweful shame if we traded him to Vancouver or somewhere else, and he still retired at the end of the season because of health problems.

Well, a pick and Hakeem don't quite match up salary-wise [IMG]

Instead, how about Country, Price, and West, and cancellation of the pick you owe us?

    couple of thoughts....

1)The Rockets would be CRAZY to trade him before the vote unless we got Garnett or Webber(which isn't gonna happen...yet). The Rockets aren't gonna screw up the arena deal so that won't happen...yet.

2)Who could we realistically get for him? I mean, everyone knows he's done! All the preseason previews make no bones about the fact he's old and useless. Don't get me wrong, he still has some value, but its not like we are the only ones that have noticed his decline.

3)In my mind, the most important thing is what helps the Rockets most. No player is more important than the team and its future. Hakeem transcends sports in H-Town more than anyone else in the history of our great city. Still, I don't think we should put him ahead of what's best for the Rockets. Call me un-loyal or whatever, but that is my view. BTW I love Hakeem and always will, but I love the Rockets more!

4)What scenarios do you guys REALISTICALLY see happening? (save the dreamcasting)

I've been checking out the RealGM site for a while now and have come to the conclusion that the only deal that makes sense to me for Hakeem would be to trade him to New York. NY is relatively old, and in the weak East might be looking for a Center. Something like a:

    Dream+Wizard+Picks for A.Houston+T.Knight+Childs+maybe a scrub

    Rockets Line-up would be:
    Francis
    Anderson
    Mobley
    Houston
    Childs
    Cato
    KT
    Taylor
    Knight
    Bullard
    Collier
    Langhli
    Moochie

    Knicks line-up:
    Ward
    Strickland
    Spreewell
    Rice
    Wizard
    LJ
    Camby
    Dream
    Longly
    Kurt Thomas
    others

The point is this trade seems works under the cap and seems beneficial on paper to both teams. It might give NY a better shot in the East, and gives the Rocks a stud in A.Houston. Besides, his name fits the city. Of coarse this probably wont happen unless many things fall into place.

Other possible teams would be Atlanta, Vancouver, Sacramento, and Minnesota. But I've picked my brain for many scenarios to have a trade that makes sense for both sides and cannot come up with one. Atlanta and Sacramento have star players on their last years, but why would they want Dream? They have no shot at the title.

As for Vancouver, it is possible for them to dump some Reeves deal on the Rocks, but then why would the Rocks want Reeves? Vancouver, like the Rocks, have a young nucleus that they want to stick together at least in the near future.

The last possibility is Minnesota. Rocks would love to have KG, and KG IMO would like to play for Rudy. But from the Wolves perspective, would you give up KG for 1 year of Dream and 2 years of Wizard? It essentially would be a "dump KG for cap space in order to rebuild deal." I doubt they would do that unless the Rocks add 5 1st rounders to the deal, and still I doubt it. Minnesota would have better offers of picks and young talent from many other teams.

All in all, the only feasable deal that makes sense would be to the Knicks. There, Dream would have a shot at the ring.

I'd rather have Dream stay though, but it's always fun to imagine.

    mobes
    anderson
    mo taylor
    garnett

The good news? -- (and it is a stretch looking for the upside here) the rockets have the leverage here. the rockets don't have to get a thing for Hakeem. 16 mill of capspace getting cleared is a great worst-case scenario. (I love the big country, west and price trade idea -- sounds like one of our past bull@#$* offers on this bbs.)

Some talents worth shipping Hakeem: stromille swift, kevin garnett, chris webber, darius miles, lamar odom.

Teams like NY (with nothing to offer), Miami (with nothing to offer), Portland (with everything to offer) and Atlanta (Mutumbo?) may be interested -- however, Minnesota seems to be a perfect match.
