Okay, I don't really know what to think about this, and I was a little bored so I thought I would ask the BBS for its thoughts. I just got a message on ICQ from a random person whom I have never talked to before (Nickname of Benjamin). I won't post his ICQ number (not even sure if I have it anymore) just in case this was all some sort of weird, but innocent, freak thing. Here is a basic transcription of our conversation.

    Benjamin: Hello there
    Me: Hi
Benjamin: I have a question for you.
Benjamin: Have you ever or do you know anyone who works for an international airport?
    Me: I don't think so.
    Me: Why?
Benjamin: Well, if you had responded in the affirmative, then I would give you the answer to that question.
    Benjamin: Thanks.

That was it. What the hell could that possibly have been about? Had the 9/11 incident not occurred, I probably wouldn't have thought anything of it...but we are all inundated with the image of terrorists on planes these days, and it just seemed like an odd question. And even odder that he would not tell me the reasoning behind it. I kind of wish I had said I knew someone now so that I might have gotten more out of him.

It could have been something simple, like a stranger wanting to know if you are allowed to bring Gameboys on international flights, or something like that. But the guy seemed so cloak and daggerish about it all, it made me think something underhanded was going on. Has anyone else had an inquiry from someone that is similar to this?

    Thoughts?

I know people are going to think this is overreacting, but my first call would've been to the FBI and let them decide.

Should have logged his/her IP address, saved ICQ number, checked IP number, checked to see if it was a bot, if it was, ignore it, otherwise hack the user... OLD SKOOL~!;)
    Seriously though, I'd ignore it.

If you have his ICQ number I would call the FBI. I think I've read about terrorists trying to buddy up to airline workers in order to get info or have them do things.

I wouldn't have done anything. I think DoD is overreacting as well.

When I used to use ICQ many years ago, I constantly got random IM's from strangers asking me weird things. Of course this was way before 9/11, but I still don't think it would phase me. I can't randomly asking people on the Internet about airport information, it just seems to sloppy. But hey, what do I know?

Overreaction or not....it probably wouldn't hurt to zip off an email to the appropriate authorities with the text of the chat and the persons ICQ number. That's their job.....to sift through stuff like this. Let them decide whether it means anything.

I wish that I got interesting ICQ messages like that. 90% of the IMs I get are from "Jenny/Candy/Becky/Honey/Cindy/Cindi/Cyndi the cam girl" wanting me to pay $3.95 a month to watch them sit around in their bra and panties.

I haven't used ICQ for years but the last time I used it, you can view the message history and get their ICQ number with their other info from there.

Well, unfortunately for me, the window was closed yesterday and I can't seem to find a log anywhere. Does ICQ automatically log? If so, can anyone instruct me where to find them?
