Do you think there are some rights that should not be sellable etc? I notice more and more we 'sign away our rights' to get some thing. [i.e. you give up some privacy to be on facebook] Do you believe there are a set of rights/privleges/etc that should protected and not able to be sold/purchased/signed away? Or is the ultimate right, the right to give away all your rights? Rocket River
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wesley_Newcomb_Hohfeld I think Hofeldian terms may aid this discussions. Basically, there are positive rights given by the law, natural rights, and negative rights to stop people from doing things we don't want. One can always waive his/her legal rights or negative rights (for a price), but I am not sure natural rights are waivable, in which the government may have a say.
I think this is relevant: http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2013/04/putting-the-i-in-ipo/309255/
When you stand in the middle of a few hundred friends and randomly shout out your thoughts, are you giving up privacy or broadcasting to a community?
^^^ It depends on the stuff shout out, the place, a number of friends, etc. etc. But OTOH, one can give up privacy rights by just walking on public streets, and hence anybody can take a picture of you and publish it (tabloid). However, I think one does not have a right to die to end all natural rights. To OP's point, a couple of years ago, a guy in NY hired a homeless person to kill him so the guy's family could get money from the life insurance the guy just bought. The homeless did kill the guy, and was arrested and charged for murder. Also I don't think a market for someone to sell hir/her own organs in this country would be legal.
