By Ira Porter A man's body - from which a lung and the heart and liver had been neatly extracted - was found in an abandoned North Philadelphia rowhouse yesterday afternoon by a man who had been foraging for scrap metal. Investigators last night were trying to determine the man's identity, as well as answers to a host of other questions, including the cause of death and whether they were dealing with a case of abuse of corpse or murder. Those determinations, police said, will not be made until after the autopsy, which has been scheduled for today. The body was found face down about 2:30 p.m. inside the first-floor back room of a trash-filled rowhouse on the 1500 block of North Eighth Street, according to police. Police responding to the scene at first believed that the death might have been due to natural causes, police said, but an on-site inspection by the Medical Examiner's Office revealed that was not the case. "We thought this was a drug overdose or a homeless person. That's what it appeared to be initially," said Homicide Capt. Charles Bloom. "It wasn't until they lifted the body up that they saw he was missing some organs." The man's body had been neatly sliced from the bottom of his neck to the base of his stomach, and several vital organs had been taken, said Bloom, who declined to describe the cutting instrument. The man's face was frozen, and heavy rope was found around his neck, police said. The unstable floor around him was littered with trash, and a chandelier and what appeared to be a bedspread were near the man's body, police said. Police believed he had been dead 24 to 48 hours, but were unsure whether he died at the scene or had been brought there. Also unclear was whether he had been cut open at the rowhouse or elsewhere. One police official said that the man's rib cage and breastbone had been taken as well. The man was described as black, about 5-foot-7 with a small body build, and 30 to 40 years old. He had been wearing blue jeans, a fatigue jacket, and a sweatshirt. The 1500 block of North Eighth Street is one of the city's most blighted streets, filled with empty lots, crumbling rowhouses and abandoned vehicles. Neighborhood residents said yesterday that drug addicts frequent the house where the body was found. Abraham Dones, 27, who lives around the corner from the house, said that he had complained to the city several times about drug dealers and addicts doing business in the homes on that block.
