Posting up is SO much harder to develop in a guard. Unless you're Kobe or MJ, you're better off with better handling. Again, Lin's handle is relatively bad. As a Lin fan, I see him becoming an all star if he supplements his speed and court vision with a polished PG repertoire. If he could somehow get to half of Steve Nash's skill, I think he'd be an all-time great, all things considered (excuse the fanboyism).
you guys can't distinguish criticism vs actual hate. I'll give a factual number. 0% of Rockets fans (Real Rockets fans, the basis and heart and soul of this board) hate or "dump" on Jeremy Lin. You newbs need to learn what it is to be on a team site, Jeremy Lin IS NOT AN EXCEPTION NOR WAS HE EXCLUSIVE FOR CRITICISM Here are players in the past who have been criticized based on PLAY Tracy McGrady Yao Ming Steve Francis Cutino Mobley Charles Barkley Clyde Drexler Hakeem Olajuwon (yes even him) If you want a place where nobody criticizes anybody and nobody cares about team first, then go here http://yaomingmania.com/forum/
he was too much of a risk. i'm not saying he WAS a risk - risk is subjective and based on what front offices knew of him, he was perceived to be too much of a risk. people won't get fired for drafting a 7ft tall player (asian or black) that didn't pan out, but people WILL get fired for drafting a 6-3 asian pg out of harvard of all places over a 6-3 black pg out of another D1 school with bbal reputation, with the asian guy turning into a flop. harvard, good around game in the ivy league. had great games against top competitions like uconn and BC, but against ivy league, very solid all around game but not the 27pt avg. stats that you look for from mid-major players in order to get drafted. he probably could've avg. 27 in ivy league but he doesn't play like that. that's why he was offered summer league opportunities from mavs, picked up GSW, and was promised by lakers to be drafted with their last pick. people thought enough of him to give him a chance without exposing themselves to any type of risk. i think if harvard had made to the big dance while he was there and made it past first round, and with him performing like he normally does on the big stage, he might gotten more looks and maybe a 2nd round pick.
Harden's the unquestioned go-to-guy on the team. He takes the big shots and the offense goes through him most of the time. But he's more of the quiet and lead-by-example sort. He doesn't say much, but the team gains confidence knowing they have a superstar to ride on if the going gets tough. Lin is more vocal. I see him talking to guys and rallying them on the court all the time. He makes an effort to connect with people, and that's highlighted by the article. I think those leadership styles complement each other well and the team is lucky to have both.
his ball handing and dribbling is good enough for him to go wherever he wants to go on the court and with his first step, take pretty much whoever he wants off the dribble. he's no skip-to-my-lou but he doesn't need to be.
Well.... then its the other teams' loss. My personal thought for Jeremy to take it to the next level next year is to go plonk himself in Gary Payton's gym for the whole of this summer and get Glove to continue tutoring him. Continue polishing everything - the jumper, the handles, the defence, etc. Everyone thinks Jeremy should be Tony Parker-lite. I think Jeremy should be Gary Payton-lite.... especially with his defence. After-all... someone has to take on the heavier defensive burden where the best backcourt in the league is concerned
You forgot Rafer And, to be fair, there is justified and unjustified criticism. Much of the "criticism" Lin got was pretty damn ridiculous. Perhaps 0% of who you consider "fans" hated on Lin, but there were undoubtedly many people posting here who seemed to have some vendetta out on Lin or Lin fans.
Lin > his fans I met the guy at his movie premiere, seems the exact opposite of his fans. He does not deny that he's inconsistent. And he doesn't play for his fans despite their hunger to defend this guy from any criticism. he only "plays" for one dude, it ain't mchale
NY numbers? You mean like 20/8? You mean like his averages these past 5 games in houston? Owait small sample size strikes again...
Seriously this annoys me to no end. His handles are bad? Do people even pay attention to how he gets his turnovers at all? Does his "bad handles" inhibit him from getting into the paint? 1) Most of his turnovers are dead-ball turnovers or off passes. In fact Harden gets the ball ripped from him more often yet we don't complain about his TOs (or at least the way he gets them) 2) I think it is clear to anyone that he still gets into the paint whenever he wants. Now I would understand if people said he needs to work on his playmaking - like i stated above, his turnovers are attributed to passes. I think working on executing better passes would cut down on his turnovers..not "better handles"
Yes. It does affect his efficiency. Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koXmXc3HZFI (see 1:13-1:21) You see when he kind of stalls at around 1:15? He does that a LOT. I saw him do that stalling motion all the time. It isn't a hesitation move and doesn't do anything but break up the pace in a bad way. See how awkward it looks? If he had a better handle, he would've penetrated the paint much more easily. Granted, he got through the second time, but that stalling motion can lead to a bad double team and a turnover. IIRC, there have been instances where he got trapped in that stalling motion and turned the ball over. And that's just one example. He also picks up his dribble quite a bit. If that isn't a sign of his bad handle affecting his performance, I don't know what is.
Here are numbers to back up your claim. Lin has had 107 bad pass TO's & 73 ball handling TO's. He has a hands rating of 23.8 (Lowry hands rating 22.8 Dragic 23.1) Compared to Hardens Hands rating of 17.2. He has had 116 bad pass TO's & 98 ball handling TO's. So yes you are right. Lin's ball handling is actually pretty good. http://www.82games.com/1213/12HOU4.HTM
Lin starting from his game against the Nets last year until his injury. 26 games : .552% TS , 39.3% AST% TOV% 21.3 Lin's last 26 games : .572% TS , 33.0 AST% TOV% 17.4
I'd say Harden leads by talent, not by example. Lead by example has to include doing dirty work which is defense.
