We are still technically still at war with them from the Korean War. We are the protector of NK's enemies SK and Japan. We are the primary country behind sanctions on them. We are the lone superpower.

Maybe not directly to the US but there is a very real threat to SK and Japan. A few years ago NK shelled an SK island killing 4 and there have been frequent incursions into SK territory. Seoul isn't that far from the DMZ and NK rockets can easily reach Japan.

In an all out war NK will lose decisively but they are capable of doing a lot of damage to the region.

How can North Korea bomb us if they see the world like this?

    Here's what I was wondering:

Why are we even allowing North Korea to get this far? We invaded Iraq on the premise that they "might" have WMD's. We've made it very clear that we're not going to allow Iran to get the bomb. Meanwhile N Korea has been working on the creation of nukes for a while now, and has even pulled off multiple successful tests. To top it all off, they are threatening to drop a nuclear weapon on the homeland, not to mention our allies. Why haven't we gone in there and destroyed their facilities at the very least? Is China the only reason?

China is one reason but consider what a mess Iraq was that is likely to make the US leadership and military pause on invading NK.

Also the information that NK might actually have nukes is much better than Iraq. Those nukes are a definite deterrent towards taking military action which is why so many countries want them.

Finally NK's military is much larger than Iraq's was and the mountainous terrain much more difficult than Iraq's for a mechanized military.

China needs North Korea as a shield against South Korea and American bases, and there is no way the US will invade North Korea unless they get China's permission. Which to be quite frank, if Kim Jong Un continues like this, might not be too far off in the future.

It is true that NK can do some serious damage to Seoul which is close to the border.

One thing I read is that S. Korea's response is to yawn. They know it isn't going to happen.

The US and N. Korea both seem to have political or economic reasons for the silly posturing. Kim needs a destraction from what a disaster the country is. The Obama Admin always worries about the attacks from Fox and the GOP about being weak. Also the military industrial complex likes to scare folks into spending more.

North Korea has conventional artillery in range and aimed at Seoul. The lesson is clear... become a tangible, real threat and US foreign policy will revert to diplomacy. This should alarm people who understand that the US saga in Iraq actively convinced much of the world that the US had forsaken "protector" (which was BS for the most part anyway, but lets roll with it) for "aggressor".

The US will not and cannot invade period. China and NK have a mutual defense agreement that forces China to defend NK if they were to be attacked. Attacking first is not and will not be an option.

North Korea would be a mess to rebuilt, and they'd cause a lot of havoc in the region.

More importantly, the US public is weary of war, the economy is still bad, and the US military is still stretched thin from Afghanistan and Iraq. Not to mention, the MIC has been pushing for conflict with Iran, not NK. We can't fight both.

Combination of "China" and the fact that while North Korea can harm or kill people, they'll never be a regional threat to American power in the way that say, Iran could be with nukes. North Korea is so much of a pariah state that they won't set any precedent, but the Iranians will, which can be evidenced by the very different responses of the Left towards a NK nuclear program - no one really says that North Korea is justified in building their nukes like they do with Iran, even though Iran has signed the NPT and North Korea hasn't. There's also the fact that East Asia is far more stable than the Middle East, which means that while a nuclear arms race in East Asia is problematic, one in the Middle East is legitimately terrifying.

The US has nothing to truly gain from fighting in North Korea. North Korea's not going to nuke us. China has stated that they won't help the North Koreans if they attack us, and America/South Korea are in no shape to rebuild North Korea.

No oil in North Korea. Nothing to gain for Haliburton, etc...

Hell, NK can't even get enough oil and gas to keep their lights on at night.

    Therein lies the difference

Plus it has already been admitted that we knew there were no WMD's in Iraq. Though for some reason the American public doesn't seem to care. Mindblowing

Well China AND they don't have a bunch of Oil we need. So no need to force democracy on them to make them "owe" us if they don't have anything we need!

Making a racist joke and then calling other people too sensitive when they call you out on it isn't the best mode of operation. Giddy might find a way to excuse it but not many others on here will.

Plus making fun of Asians because of their eyes is about as funny and dated as Amos and Andy.
