One the one hand I can't believe the mosquito's are already getting bad in my backyard... on the other hand, I guess it is April already and this is Texas.

What are the best options to eliminate them? I have a number of problems:

Sprays - my wife is allergic to deet. we also have very very young kids around (newborns and such), and we'd prefer not to use deet.

Fence spray systems - cost. these suckers are expensive. and also chemicals. typical repellant is definitely highly chemical in nature. they have some less chemically stuff, but still not the safest imo.

Traps - these can be expensive, too. how effective? if you want to use C02, some require propane. I've read some reviews and some of them don't seem to be super durable.

I'm hoping someone might have some products they can personally recommend as awesome.

Apologies if there have been threads on this in the past.

How bad are they? My sister lives in Lake Jackson and nothing ever works for her.
But for my area I live in the Off Lamps are usually useful for me

It's probably the one thing that followed me from houston from a bad perspective. and it's only because of where I live specifically in austin. most of austin is a bit better on the mosquito front. but my backyard is surrounded on all sides by houses (not like right on top of me, it's a nice backyard other than this issue) and then I have a semi-covered patio, and am somewhat at the bottom of a hill. Most of the 4 houses that in one way or another surrounded our backyard are somewhat elevated. So long-story short, it appears as if the mosquitos are being somewhat pushed into my backyard, and then they love to congregate in our patio area.

    I've seen this company:

I'm happy to spend some money to get the problem solved. Not a ridiculous amount, but i'd like my kids to be able to play outside without getting welt sized bites or worse west nile or something.

Is it mean that my first thought was "maybe there'll be an earthquake and B-Bob will fall in the ocean!"...just kidding. yeah, it sounds nice. I'll take Austin... if I can get rid of the mosquitos!

A friend of mine had one of the CO2 things growing up. I remember looking at it and there was easily hundreds, if not thousands of dead mosquitos in it, so I guess it works. Not sure the brand, price, or whatever.

oh is that how it works?

Someone go tell Bill Gates his anti mosquito initiative is doing it wrong.

I think if they drink enough blood they die too. Seems like a forsure way of killing them. Just let them feed on you long enough.

The newer products don't appear to be on Amazon. Most seem to be older models. It is interesting how all the reviews are either love it or hate it. Other review sites all seem to have good things to say... but I am wary of anything but Amazon for some reason.

    What works??

This might sound counterintuitive but have you thought about building a pond w/ Koi fish? Yes Mosquitoes are heavily attracted to water and that is a good thing w/ Koi ponds.

I've been working on a building a aquaponics system in the backyard and have read through many forums that having ponds w/ fish reduce the amount of mosquitoes in the area..

Supposedly the mosquitoes will constantly want to lay larvae in the water to breed but the Koi's or other type of fish constantly gobble them up. With a short lifespan and not smart enough to move on these little buggers eventually die.

    Just food for thought.

^ not sure if its counter-intuitive or not, but it does sound expensive. in austin, i've investigated just putting up a few bat houses. but apparently it can take months for the bats to finally "move-in". might still do that anyway.

There's this medicine that kills them 100% guaranteed. I forgot what it's called but you have to inject them individually.

Not mean! I was worrying about earthquake comebacks (and actual earthquakes) even as I typed that. But odds are in the next big one, I will not fall into the ocean, but the back of my house might fall off.

Then I'll be begging to trade for mosquitos.

lol bats? I'd rather have a mosquito infestation than issues with bats in a residential area.

You probably already have bats in your residential area. What's the issue anyway?

I'm only about 2 miles from the McNeil bridge in Round Rock (larger bat community than the Congress Bridge). They are no help. We get it bad because of a green belt near by that is 1/2 swamp land after any amount of rain. I'm already dreading next week when it warms back up.
