Well, There is this elective class I am taking, and I can't stand it because

1.) it makes 3 of my 4 classes in which I have to do presentations, putting too much pressure to remember multiple presentations at once.

2.) the mandatory attendance policy is a joke and frankly unreasonable IMO. For a Monday-Wednesday-Friday class, a student is only allowed 3 free absences all semester. Absences after 3 mean a half-letter grade drop penalty.

The 2nd reason really turns me off. This class is not for my major, and I will not put this class above my more important ones.

When I take an elective, I usually misses btw 6-8 classes in order to focus on the more important ones. For example, I may miss class because of a group project all-nighter or a presentation in another class, in which I need complete focus because I stink at presenting anyway.

I have 4 absences in this class already. This ain't high school, and I do not want my grade to de determined by attendance alone. My GPA (a 3.0 now) has risen every semester since I have been here, so me missing classes every so often has never affected my performance.

It is my fault for not researching the attendance polices of elective courses.

The big plus of dropping this class, is that I will still graduate in Dec 2003. I will just take 12 hours instead of 9 hours in the fall.

If I drop, my GPA won't be affected because I have a B in there right now.

anybody here at any school now or in the past been in this position?

Won't set your grad date back, won't adversely affect GPA, not relevant to your major, elective class - What are you worried about? Drop it.

I assume you are at UT.

March 24th is the deadline. here is actual rule........

"Dropping a course after the fourth week of classes. The following rules apply from the twenty-first class day through the midsemester deadline in a long-session semester and from the eleventh class day through the last class day of a summer term.

To drop a course during this period, the student must have the approval of the instructor, the student's adviser, and the student's dean. If the instructor approves the drop, he or she will assign the symbol Q or a grade of F. The symbol Q indicates that the student has a grade of at least C in the course, that no grade has yet been assigned, or that no academic penalty is in order because of the student's performance and the nature of the course. In compelling circumstances, the student's dean may assign the symbol Q for nonacademic reasons. "

another reason why we should all take joke/stupid/easy classes for electives...I never take a class "just to fill out my schedule". I always know what i'm getting into or i won't take it at all. Having said that, I'm a computer science major...there aren't too many easy classes to take :(

I recall having 9 hours my last semester. That's a nice way to go out.

There's plenty reasons why you should take one that matters. I was Finance undergrad, and I went through advanced COBOL for my electives. It paid-off.

I withdrew from a class once. But 2/3 (no kidding) withdrew with me. It was calculus 1 for micro electronic engineers. The teacher was brutal and sucked. My grade in the class at that point was a 31. But I was not alone. 7 people finished the class. In my other three classes I scored a 3.69 GPA and ended up making the Dean's list. Too funny.

sometimes you just have to drop a class. It happens.

I usually took 2 hard classes, 1 medium class, and then a joke for liberal arts if I could. It usually worked out that way pretty good. If you know the teachers you can get a good feel for what you are getting into.

Man, I haven't been to class for like a month. That's the beauty of taking heavily portfolio-based ones like painting and photography.

If you don't mind having a Q on your transcript, go for it. If I were you, I'd take it pass/fail. You will get credit, it won't effect your GPA, and imo it looks a lot better.

Just make sure you pass it. I can't tell how many peopel used to come into my office at UT pissed off that they got an "F" on a course that they took P/F.
    They'd say "but I took it Pass / Fail... I don't understand why I got an F".
    I'd say "Did ya Pass?"
    "No..."
"OK what part did you not understand about Pass / FAIL ?

Taking a Q is much better than an F :D

I'm struggling in HDF 322. Senioritis! I have a C or D right now. I'm going to take it P/F.

I am currently taking this class pass-fail, the problem is I can't guarantee that I will not miss another day of this class. That is no way I will just miss one more class day this semester.

If I miss, perhaps, three more class days, which is extremely possible, than i lose my B.

Then I have to write 32 hand written pages in which I have to talk about my voice and other's voices. Not gonna waste my time doing this useless crap. There goes my C.

This class is a speaking voice class, and my teacher makes us write this much??

I spend soooo much time with my advertising groups researching and writing portions of my advertising media plan packets which are normally between 50-80 pages. Then I have to practice presenting all this stuff to real ad professionals.

My work in my advertisng courses gets really heavy in early-mid april, group projects- and presesntations galore, and my attendance of my elective course will be affected.

I will get a Q because my grade is decent enough right now.

RM95, I look forward to my beer bud.

By the way, just to make you feel at ease and toot my own horn, I got into the #1 grad school at Syracuse even with a big fat W on my transcript. So it's not that big of a deal. But I'm sure that a "pass" probably does look better. I just don't think it's anything to worry about. Nobody is going to notice unless you have a whole string of those scarlet letters.
