I got this off of ESPN...I must have missed it... "The Texans released S Matt Stevens because of salary cap considerations Feb. 27, though GM Charley Casserly said the team would try to re-sign him. Stevens, selected in last year's expansion draft, was fourth on the team with 117 tackles." Thanks god this loser is gone...He should have been released because he sucked... I can't remember how many times this *** got beat and was out of position... The problem is, how is this spot going to get filled... Free Agency, Draft???
All I got to say is they shouldn't sign his sorry azz... There's got to be a better playa that can do a hell of a better job...
Stevens was 2nd on the team in tackles. The Texans saved $2 million by releasing Stevens, $3.85 million by restructuring Tony Boselli's contract two weeks ago, and $2.7 million by parting ways with return specialist Jermaine Lewis last week. Lewis visited the Miami Dolphins on Thursday and is scheduled to meet with Cincinnati today. "Matt had the best experience of his career in the NFL with the Texans," said Neil Cornrich, Stevens' agent. "Both sides want him to be a part of the team, and hopefully, we'll be able to work something out. Matt really wants to be back." Stevens, who helped the Patriots win the Super Bowl two years ago, led all Texans defensive backs with 83 tackles, second on the team behind inside linebackers Jamie Sharper and Jay Foreman, who tied for first with 137 tackles apiece. The Texans acquired Stevens, 29, from New England in the expansion draft. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/sports/1798577
Just to clarify, he was 3rd on the team. Secondly, tackles doesnt tell the whole story. Stevens could possibly be one of the worst tackling safeties I have ever seen. The guy does not know the first thing about tackling. He uses his arms to tackle instead of his arms and body. The guy would be a decent backup safety.
Yeah he did suck but thats the best a first year team can do. Only way he is on the team next year will be for special teams.
I'm not defending the guy or anything but I've seen Stevens knock the crap out of receivers going for the ball. If anything it does provide some entertainment.
The only bad thing is he hits them hard when the ball is over their head or if the WR is not looking. He couldn't meet a player in the hole and hit him like that.
"helped" the patriots? good god -- i've seen the chronicle unconsciously spin on the texans' behalf before, but even this is excessive. stevens was terrible last year, quite possibly the worst starter in all of football. oh, sure, he made a lot of tackles, cause teams were running plays at him. he tackles high, he uses his arms and he may have been the most passive blitzing safety i've ever seen. i'm sure casserly is paying him lip service, pretending there's a chance he'll be back.
