At the end of McHale's post game press availability, He was asked about the death of his ex-teammate Ray Williams. The comments begins at 5:10 into the video above.

It is worth a listen. Really shows who McHale is as a person and why guys like playing for him.

According to a 2010 Boston Globe report, Ray Williams became homeless and got back on his feet with help from, among others, Larry Bird and Kevin McHale:

Comments from KM at the time:

There is also a video with Williams at the Boston Globe site. Interesting enough, Williams said the one thing he didn't miss about the NBA was flying.

It cracked me up when Mchale recalled Williams stood up for him even though Mchale was the bigger guy.

McHale is a good coach and a better man. I propose that any poster denigrating his name from now should be temporarily suspended. It is childish and demeaning.

I respect him as a player and as a man but he still needs to prove himself as a coach. Also a pretty bad GM when he was gming the Wolves. :p

I read the thread title and knew someone would do this one...didn't think it would be in the first reply.

I was worried when we hired McHale. Not now. He's handled personal and professional adversity this year very, very well. Great example of manliness and class for the young players. He's not perfect, but he'll do. Long live McHale!

Not to derail the thread, but Mchale is in the process of getting one of the youngest team in the NBA to make the playoffs, all the while making adjustments for our serial trader GM. You want a bad coach? Call Keith Smart.

In addition to getting the team ready for each game (yes, he delegates but he is the top dog), he spends extra time teaching our inexperienced bigs how to play in the paint.

McHale is a good enough coach, but hasn't proven to be great yet. That should have been your comment.

Agree with this. I think you can find better coaches out there (*cough*SVG/JVG*cough*), but honestly Mchale has done an average job at worst as a Rockets coach. If you just look at results he's taken the youngest team in the NBA to the playoffs, bottom line is he delivered.

I would be willing to bet there's only a handful of coaches who could do a better job with this team than mchale and all of them have jobs and wouldn't be available. I just don't see svg/jvg while good coaches being able to develop and comfort the young players on this team. Those guys need vets who understand there roles and will run the coaches schemes.

Mchale is a good coach who has his players playing to their strengths and all showing improvements through out the season. Look at the job he's done with asik, smith, dmo and Trob over the course of the season. They have all gotten so much better. Even Lin has improved a ton from the start of the season I think mchale instilled confidence in the guys and gets them ready for each and every game.

He's taken the youngest team in the NBA on the cusp of the playoffs. There all overachieving and the funny thing is if you had done a poll at the beginning of the season asking if the rockets make the playoffs is mchale doing a good job? The answer would have been 90/10 yes. Sure he's had some head scratchers with the rotation but follow other teams all coaches have these same issues over the course of a long season. Bottom line is mchale is a good coach and is doing a good job the players respect him and love playing for him. That's really what coaching in the NBA is all about. X and O coaches ate for high school and college were the players are less talented and skilled.

    RIP Ray Williams

Alright. I will agree with you there. He certainly isn't a bad coach. I should say that I am not confident that he is a good coach yet. He has done a pretty good job this season.

Why because I am a "LOF"? I like Lin and all but I certainly don't think highly of him as a player just yet. For the most part he gets benched since he plays poorly. I usually agree with Mchale when it comes to his minutes. He is inconsistent.

Funny how life turned out for these young guys. Thompson, McHale and Williams became top 10 draft picks and played in the NBA. Saunders became a coach and Duffy a player agent (representing, among others, Yao Ming).
