Read the owners manual. See if there are any instructional classes. Go to Carter's country once comfortable. Always use safe practices, and realize its a great right but a greater responsibility. Make sure you feel comfortable with guns. Do some self reflection and what you feel comfortable with. For example, I don't feel comfortable on roller coasters so its not for me.

Basic Rules of gun safety: Don't point it at anything your not willing to destroy. Always keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target. Treat all guns as if they are always loaded. Be sure of your target.
Don't do anything stupid. You'd be amazed how many accidents would be avoided if people followed that advice. And go look up the five weapons safety rules the marine corps makes you repeat over and over and over and ovef and over and over and over and over and over....
