God, I hope not. When I was a kid, we watched the Yankees on a black and white TV and admired their players... but we ALWAYS hated the Yankees! For some of us, even in Texas, it's a tradition. :p

Do all of you Yankee haters hate the Red Sux, the Mutts, and the Artless Dodgers too, because they also have huge payrolls? What about the Rangers and the Braves? The Braves even manage to be a good team with their gigantic payroll, but no one hates on them. I guess the point is y'all are deluding yourselves into thinking you hate the Yankees because of their payroll. The real reason you hate them is because they won 26 WS including 4 very recently and whatever sorry ass team you root for did not.

I've said this the last two years, but I truly believe that this is the Red Sox's year representing the AL.

    Stupid Moniker, aka Hydra,

You just don't get it. Who increased their payroll to be at least double and possibly triple all of the mid market teams in baseball this year?

Who brought in Raul Mondesi last year with an enormous contract and blocked a cheaper, talented Rookie in Juan Rivera from playing?

Who signed Todd Zeile to dh this summer, except Nick Johnson, another cheap, fine prospect was ready for the job?

Who signed a foreign unknown in Jose Contreras for 8 million dollars and aren't even going to start the poor guy?

Who signed the oft injured worthless Rondell White at 4 mil a year last year?

Who signed one year wonder Chris Hammond to a 2.5 mil bullpen contract this year?

    Answer: the Bankees.

What did the Dodgers do this year? Cut Karros and Grudizalanek, traded for Daryle Ward and signed Fred Mcgriff.

The RedSox? Signed Jeremy Giambi, Bill Mueller, David Ortiz, and Kevin Millar, and lost out on Contreras and Colon.

And you have the gall to tell me, those two high payroll clubs compare to the ostrocity of an offseason the Boss went out and had, considering I didn't even mention Matsui's name and contract.

    Get real.

Oh and btw, the Yankees history is made off of their bankroll, so get a clue. They bought Babe Ruth from Beantown to start their legacy and then when they started to win in the mid 90's, it was there ability to outspend and rely on the farce that is "Yankee tradition"

I won't deny the Yankees haven't developed some fine talent on their own, like Jeter, Posada, Soriano. But guess what, they illegally bought Drew Henson from the reds, they were going to trade Soriano to houston for Moises Alou except Alou blocked it(not sure why?) Then George swipes Wells back right under Arizona's nose.

Just because the Bankees play in a sport whose owners are to stupid to see they need a salary cap to level the playing field, does not make the Bankees a dynasty.

A dynasty is not outspending everybody for talent like NY does, in fact Oakland is a better run organization right now than the Bankees, at 100 million dollars less of a payroll.

The Yankees are a good team and organization, but I'm sorry, some of us like seeing the entire game of baseball being good to watch? Go tell an Expos fan or a Royals fan or a Pirates or Reds fan, how they are supposed to compete when George refuses to even expanding the gap by a little bit?

Just because the Bankees have the money and rings doesn't make them a worthwhile dynasty if you ask me. Because in this day of baseball free agency, money=rings.

I really wish Billy Beane and George Steinnbrenner would swap places for a season, just to put George in his place.

That is why I hate the Bankees.

I hate the Bankees too, but I like the Red Sox's chance.

First of all, I don't know how wise it was to spend so much money on Contreras and Matsui. Granted, that money probably barely made a dent on Steinbrenner's pocket, but I don't believe it's a sure thing that a Cuban or Japanese star can immediately make the transition to become an American star. Yankees have a staff that's starting to show it's age. Other than Mussina, I don't know if there's another pitcher on that team that is a certified ace.

Second, I think Boston made some marked improvements without spending the big bucks. Jeremy Giambi has always produced good OPS numbers, but has never gotten the playing time. David Ortiz was a big prospect, and had a couple of decent years with the Twins. He might be primed to breakout this year.

The pitching staff is strong at the top with Martinez and Lowe anchoring the staff aces. Wakefield had a good year last year. Casey Fossum and John Burkett rounding out the staff is pretty good. However, they don't have much depth, and they have to hope that the pitchers stay relatively healthy.

The offense should continue to improve if Trot Nixon and Jason Varitek continue to develop. Also, call me crazy if you must, but I think if Manny Ramirez and Nomar Garciaparra stay healthy, they're every bit as good as the power duo of Giambi and Soriano of the Yankees.

The bullpen situation of the Sox scares me a bit. They'll be closing games by committee with Alan Embree, Chad Fox, and perhaps Ramiro Mendoza. Chad Fox has killer stuff, but he hasn't been healthy for a while. Embree and Mendoza both have good stuff, but they have never had closing experience. However, if luck is on their side, or if they're able to acquire a closer, the combination of the 3 would make a killer setup crew.

The Bankees are clearly the favorites, but my gut feeling tells me that the Sox aren't that far off. With a little luck, this could be the Sox's year.

    DV,

    Excellent post....I'll just add this:

    Stupid/Hydra,

Maybe people hate the "Bankees" (great name DV!) because they are idiotic enough to get 8 f*cking starters!! That 8 man rotation is going to be fierce, I tell ya!!

You know I laugh every time I read how the Bankees were "supposed" to lower their payroll because of luxury taxes or revenue spending yet they keep increasing it! LOL

It is like spending money for Steinbrenner is like a drug addict shooting up another shot of heroin...he just can't stop although he knows he needs to. It is called having some fiscal sanity which he has no clue about.

    OldManBernie,

You forgot to mention Millar, a guy that the Red Sox, have coveted for a while. I think he along with Giambi and Mueller will make their team very dangerous offensively.

I do wish that we have someone better than John Burkett in the rotation but Pedro, D-Lowe, Wakefield, and Fossum are very good. I am also skeptical about the bullpen by committee, but the talent is there to pull it off.

However, I have lived through the tragedy known as 1986 so I won't believe it until I see the Sox get that final out in the world series.

You guys act like no one hated the Yankees until the last two years. Why did you hate them before this offseason? It isn't like the Red Sux where cutting payroll do be on par with Kansas City, now were they? If the Red Sux had won 4 of the last 8 WS, people would be b****ing about them. My point is that it isn't the payroll that pisses people off, its the fact that they use that payroll and win.

    StupidMoniker,

My hatred of the Bankees has lasted a lot longer than two years.

And number 2, I didnt like it when Pedro was traded from Montreal, same with Floyd, etc. But excuse me, have the Red Sox tried killing the game of baseball lately. Last time I checked that team had a lot of holes for a 100 million dollar payroll.

The Dodgers have spent but have sucked for 5 or 6 years, they fall in the same boat as the Orioles, you laugh at them, not get mad at them.

The Rangers? They will never be really good, unless AROD takes a huge pay cut. And they are slashing payroll too.

The Braves? Did I miss them cost cut their strength this offseason, or am I stupid? Maddux-Ortiz-Hampton-Byrd-Marquis is not better than their staff last year.

The Yankees have a payroll of 150-160 million dollars, after the league implemented a luxury tax to prevent that. For comparison sake, 2/3 of the rest of baseball teams are at 70 mil or below. That is double, and triple and beyond a lot of teams payroll.

And the yankees don't need half of the guys they signed. Like why sign contreras if he never starts, Rondell White, Raul Mondesi, Todd Zeile, exercising their 11 million dollar option on Andy Pettitte?

NY wins in large part because of their revenue, and they unlike most big league teams, have the funds to make huge moves around July 31st, to push them over the top.

When the yankees payroll is 40 mil above the 2nd highest in MLB, being Boston, and the bottom teams have 20 mil payrolls, something is really wrong, and the Yankees aren't helping bridge the gap, they only are making it wider.

Thus, again, I have perfectly explained my hatred for the Bankees.

I hate the Yankees because the financial system in baseball is set up to favor them, and they take advantage of that. Is it their fault that the system is set up that way? No. Is it their fault that they take advantage of that? Yes. Should they stop taking advantage of this setup? Probably not, if they want to keep winning. Should they care that I hate them for this? No, and neither should you. Quit trying to convince people to stop "hating" on your team. Hating specific teams in sports is a big part of why it is fun. It adds fire and significance to games that might otherwise have not been there.

Just deal with it, quit whining, and enjoy the 100 or so wins your team will deliver this season. God knows it's more than most fans will see out of their team.
