If we are in the lottery, should we send Francis or Yao to be our representative? And do we want to send someone who is lucky, or someone who is unlucky?

1st of all Memphis owes our pick to Detroit for the Otis Thorpe trade, so our pick actually goes to Detroit. So we won't be sending Steve or Yao because we don't have a lottery pick even if we make the lottery ,and theres no need to wish Memphis luck because they owe the pick too Detroit...Just a thought :)

Actually, Ming1111, in my understanding, that is incorrect.

According to RealGM, Memphis owes Detroit a 1st round pick, which must be Memphis'. No option. It's due by '04. Top-1 protected in '03, unprotected in '04.

I seriously doubt they would send Detroit their pick this year, since they hope to be a much improved team next year, and not so high in the lottery.

That makes it sound like Detroit's choice. Why would it be top 1 protected if it wasn't?

according to realgm, it says we owe them a pick due in '03 that can be anywhere in the top 13. i had thought it had to be within 3 of our own, but apparently that has expired as someone mentioned earlier. so are we real sure that we can give them any lottery pick if we accidentally get in the top 3? as far as memphis, why is it always mentioned everywhere you hear these things that they have to give detroit their pick. i have never heard of them having the option to hold it to 2004 except that they don't have to give it up if it's number 1. otherwise, i have always heard it is basically detroit's pick. any superofficial answers to any of these questions, not just guesses or anything?

I figure unless it is #1 this year, it's Detroit's, no matter what. Wording is a bit strange on RealGM site.

As unlikely as it seems....Orlando did it the second year they had Shaq. They got Webber.

Two observations:

1. If the Rockets come up big in the lottery. apparently they can give the Grizz someone else's lottery pick(if they can acquire one). The question is...when do the Rockets have to decide, before the lottery or after?
If it's after, and the Rockets win, I'm sure it'd be pretty easy to put an offer together for a low lotto team's pick to give Memphis. Can anyone say Cat, etc for the right to keep James?:D

2. The Grizz will end up giving Detroit either 2-13 this year or 1-13 next year. All for our old friend Otis Thorpe!!

It's not easy. Why do other low lottory teams want to help us keep James? Which team you honestly see would trade a lottory pick for any of our players outside of Yao and Steve?

I was under the impression that Memphis gets our pick with no protections on it. If we're able to trade it down for a lower lottery pick, then that still leaves a condition attached. So, that begs the question: What is the date that it has to be relinquished? Before, or after, the lottery drawing?

Now, if we truely are able to trade the pick down for a lower lottery pick, there is still another trade option that no one has mentioned. We could make a trade of players with Memphis, pick up a future #1 pick, & allow them to retain this year's #1 overall pick.

How about Battier/Swift/Trybanski/future #1 pick for Taylor & the untraded #1 pick.

Currently, NY, Miami, Milwaukee, Atlanta, Chicago, Toronto, Cleveland, Memphis, Denver, Golden State, Seattle, the Clippers, & of course, Houston, are all lottery bound.

If LeBron is all he's cracked up to be, then surely the Clippers would do a S&T with us for Miller & possibly Brand, while taking some dead weight back (Rice), in exchange for swapping picks. If not them, then one of the other teams would most likely step up to the plate.

Too bad the odds of our pick ending up #1 overall are way against it happening. But, stranger things have happened.

I'd rather make the playoffs, though.

We won't have a lottery pick. So the Grizzlies won't have a shot.

If that did happen and the Grizzlies did get Lebron with out pick, in my eyes, it still looks like a decent trade.
We took the sure path and got a bonafide All Star starter in Steve Francis. Lebron will probably be good, but how long will it take him to make an impact.
Francis already had made his mark in the league.

Are you kidding? In a supposedly weaker draft than last year, we offer the bottom teams any combo they want of players like Cat, Boki, MoT, Cato, TMo plus future picks. Shoot, they could have all of those guys if it meant the Rockets could get James.

Do you think a bottom lottery team would rather stay put and gamble in a weaker draft, or take a Rockets' offer of any or all of those players/picks?

Plus wasn't the Boki pick the one from Orlando(from the Francis trade)? Or was the Orlando pick one of the picks we gave for the Griffin deal? Either way, the Rockets still came out doing well. Really well if our pick to Memphis doesn't become James!:D

The Boki pick was a direct result of the Olajuwon trade and the Raptors miraculously making the playoffs last year.
