I didn't see this posted anywhere else, so I thought I'd let everyone know, for what it's worth. I was stuck in the airport for a while on Monday, and I was wasting time in the book store. So I picked up a copy of the Sporting News to read the NBA season preview. (I looked on their online site and I couldn't find any of this)

I don't know if any of you get it, or anyone wants to buy it, but I'll just summerize. A couple things stuck out.

    1. Rudy T was picked to be Coach of the Year. They said something along the lines of, "Coach of the year is traditionally given to the coach of the team that surpasses expectations, and the Rockets are certainly set to do just that."

    2. Steve Francis was projected to be an All-NBA Third Team guard, but they said that in 2 seasons, he will surpass Jason Kidd and Gary Payton as the premier guard in the league.

    3. Carroll Dawson was given props for nailing a key player two seasons strait using only exception money.

    4. Overall, the Rockets were projected 21st, with a record of 37-45. (only mostly sure of the record part) Their mentality was something along the lines of, "While Steve Francis is undoubtedly a superstar, the ensemble of Mo Taylor, Cuttino Mobley, Shandon Anderson, Kelvin Cato, and Kenny Thomas is more likely mediocre than magnificant."

    Anyway, interesting at least...

If all we have to do is surpass expectations, and the expectation is a record of 37-45, then Rudy has the Coach of the Year locked up, becuase we are going to win way more than that!

So wait...not sure I get sporting news logic...if the rockets are "set" to surpass expectations...doesn't that mean the expectations are for them to do better than expected? so how can they surpass expectations if they are expected to do better than that in the first place?

And exactly whose expectations are they surpassing with a 37-45 record?

Kenny Thomas had a foul called on him in the Western Conference Finals.

Sorry guys, I just report the facts... or opinions as the case may be... I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say the 37 wins is the expectation, but that they're expecting more than that, and thus, Coach of the Year...
