Championship Manager 4 ISS Pro Evolution 2 CM4 is still the finest football management game to date. ISS had the best gameplay mechanics which no FIFA could've ever replicated. Oh man, I remember all the cold winter evenings spent renaming the players' names, f.e. Rolando to Ronaldo - and that was the real Ronaldo, not some CR7 shmuck....

For recent games, I've not been overly impressed with the big sports games. Madden/NCAA had issues. NBA 2K does some things right, but they appear to not have a QA team, or they ignore issues brought up by QA team. If they actually did that, the games would probably be excellent. Not a big soccer fan, although I played some of the FIFA games, and they seemed really solid. And I don't need to talk about MLB 2K. (OK, there are the NHL games, but I haven't played an NHL game since...NHL '99 I think?). MLB The Show is the only (current) series that I think actually gets it right...usually. Shame I'm only a casual MLB fan because it blows the other games out of the water IMO. I'd love a NBA game with the quality/polish of The Show (I know they had their own NBA game, and it wasn't very good...not sure what happened there). For past games, NBA Street, SSX, Tony Hawk, etc., are all great. NFL2K5 also was a lot of fun. Not a big fan of simulation racing, though Gran Turismo is definitely a quality series.
Basketball = NBA 2K9 (XBOX360) Football = NFL 2K5 (PS2) and Tecmo Bowl (NES) Baseball = Major League Baseball Featuring Ken Griffey, Jr. (N64) Soccer = Nintendo World Cup (NES)
Those were my go to games too... Also loved NBA2K (stayed up nights playing this game) on the Dreamcast and MVP Baseball 04 Right now, NBA2K13 and MLB The Show 13 (I LOVE this game...closest thing to MVP Baseball) I should never buy games other than sports games...I don't have time playing games that have stories..but then I'm always suckered into buying games like Assassin's Creed, Batman and Red Dead Redemption...haven't finished any of them
