Video Editing Hardware Help

    I need a powerful graphics card for video editing on my windows notebook and have never had to buy a graphics card independently so I don't know much about it. ATM I'm trying to figure out the difference between a graphics card and GPU and which one I need exactly.

    Right now I have a NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 460M. How good/bad is this?

    If you had to recommend one or two top of the line options, which would they be?

    For background, I'm not making highlight videos I really need a top of the line or near top of the line options for advanced editing.

    Any advice would be highly appreciated. I'm not switching to a MAC because my laptop is otherwise extremely powerful and I think I can get better value by improving my graphics card than buying a brand new mac. Plus I prefer Premiere Pro CS6 over FCPX and these are the only two softwares I have been trained to use.

    I edit in Sony Vegas and it gives a decent response on my LCD screen... I use the following:
    Display adapter type NVIDIA GeForce GT 440
    Total available graphics memory 4096 MB
    Dedicated graphics memory 1024 MB
    Dedicated system memory 0 MB
    Shared system memory 3072 MB
    Display adapter driver version 9.18.13.697
    Primary monitor resolution 1280x1024
    DirectX version DirectX 10

    But then again, I built the machine and has 32 Gb of RAM... so I don't know if that affects the performance with rendering, display, etc. I

    You don't need an amazing video card for video editing. I do it on my laptop and Microsoft Surface all the time, both with integrated graphics. With that said, I swear by Camtasia Studio.... idiot proof editing.

    Yes I'm not happy with it. I have 14G RAM which is plenty. Plus I have a notebook so I'm limited by the number of slots.

    No I was trying to make that much obvious in the OP. I definitely need an upgrade. Most projects I'm working on wouldn't fit on two Microsoft Surfaces. I also need more than idiot proof editing.

    CPU is way more important than a video card.
    Sony Vegas Pro is better than premiere, in my opinion.

    I'd add more memory and upgrade the video card. You always want to start out with more than you think you need. Keep in mind that as the newer versions come out, they'll need more RAM, Power, better video card, etc to keep running smooth.
