Yao Ming said: 1. Jordan asked Haywood to sit on Ming's knees to ensure the defence rebound. Ming smiled to Jordan and said, "I already have injury on my knee. Please don't do that." 2. That goaltending. That block is better that the one when Ming blocked the last shot of the USA university team at Beijing. But that time it was at beijing and this time it was at Washington. 3. He grasped the last rebound and found they still have 6 seconds. So he wanted to run a fastbreak. But the defenders of Wizards were very fast. He was wondering why they didn't call a time out then? 4. About K Brown. If Ming entered NBA at 19 years old, he could be worse than Brown. Too many pressures for a kid (#1 pick). 5. About the three blocks of Haywood to him. He has found the way to deal with Haywoods. Cannot wait to play him again. 6. The game with Spurs is very important for Rockets.
This is one of the greatest things about watching Yao. The learning curve on both sides is amazingly fast. First Yao learned, from a single game against each opponent, how to play him. Remember those stats on "Yao's first game against X" vs. "Yao's second game against X"? He learned incredibly fast. Then the league woke up and realized how good he was and started studying his every move to figure out how to neutralize him. They learned how to block him and keep him away from the basket and mess up his rhythm and get inside his head. Now we go to to the next stage, in which he studies their adjustments the way he studied their basic game. He's going to adjust his game to beat their adjustments. And on and on it goes. I love this game. I love this player.
I agree. And from what I saw in the 4th quarter what Ming learned to do was use the "Jump Hook". Remember that Jump Hook he took as he was going into the paint? MONEY! He needs to bring that sucker out multiple times a night. It WON'T BE BLOCKED! The shots that Ming had blocked were the jumpers mainly because he can't get good "seperation" from his defender. He has little lift in his legs and little seperation and thus the defender is there to block the shot. Ming adjusted to this via being a bit more agressive and bumping the defender (creating seperation) and then going with the hook shot which is tough to block. Chris
Yao Ming said about Haywood: "He is very strong. But his strength is only effective when he defend me face-to-face. When I pierce through his side, although he can follow with me, he loses his power(in the moving). I push down my body on him first and then I can score easily. I am eager to prove this to you (Reporter). Cannot wait the next time when I meet him."
Yao was also asked how did it feel to see the REAL MJ, Yao said yes now he's seen it for real how unstoppable MJ was. He said thank god MJ will retire next season so he won't have to be irritated any more. But he thought the refs robbed him of a block on MJ for the last time. He said it's probably because he's on Washington's home court. He also said with 6 secs left they didn't call a TO, he thought there were plenty of time to do a fastbreak. However, SF sped up but stopped suddenly, so he had to throw it to Cat. He thought Cat was probably tired and didn't want to play a 2nd OT that's why he went for 3.
He didn't say anything bad about Steve. Ming said he was teasing R. Miller when Miller had a 1/12 shooting rate the other night with Wizards. Now Steve had a 1/13 night. It happens to everybody.
I know he didn't say anything bad about Steve, he just sighed about Steve's shooting. I like the fact that he said my bro shot worse instead of Steve shot worse. He also said if not for Mo, game would have been long over.
W&S, thanks for the translations, especially the stuff on Haywood. I find it fascinating to see how Yao picks apart his opponant and discusses strategy on how to beat them. Yao is a quick learner. I am looking forward to see Yao's strategies in action against Haywood next year. If there is anything more from the interview to translate please do so!! Chris
Well, Yao did jokingly brag about he is a better man than Kawnme Brown. Yao: There was a big contrast in tonight's game... Yang: Go ahead. Yao: The #1 pick from two years ago was a DNP and the #1 pick from last year played 39 min. Hehe, that's yours truely. Yang: Quit bragging. You owe Brown a dinner. You have yet honored the deal.(what's that about?) Yao: To be honest, it's a pity to see the #1 pick(Brown) in this situation. He is just too young for NBA. Too much attention from the media and too much pressure surrounding him. Had I entered NBA when I was 19, I'm sure I would do worse than him. That's a new side of Yao that I'm seeing the first time. He can brag about himself but still look at things objectively. He is smarter than most people I know.
I believe that Yao's joked in the past that he owned Kwame a dinner because had he entered the draft earlier he probaby would have been the No. 1 pick ahead of Kwame.
Off-topic (so sue me) Smeg, Don't folks from "down undah" consider maps of Australia such as this one from your World Tour page to be upside down?
Actually, Yao joked that both Kwame and the last pick owe him a dinner. Because if he enter the draft that year, Kwame would not be the #1 and the last one would drop off the draft. Dr Q
