I was checking out your site about the Rockets draft pick obligations and was wondering what the deal is behind Milwaukee's pick--it says the year it's due is 2001, but it's protected until 2007? Just curious.

    Prem,

The deal is Milwaukee must give us their first round pick in the next draft, unless it is a top 10 pick (which we shouldn't expect). If it is a top 10 pick, they keep it and we get their pick in the following draft, unless again it is a top 10 pick. And so on until 2007. In 2007, if they have had a top 10 pick every year from 2001 to 2007, they lose that top 10 protection and we get their pick in 2007 regardless of how high it is.

That's what the condition is. However, in reality, Milwaukee is certainly going to the playoffs, and will not be in the lottery. That protection won't mean anything and we'll get their pick, which I would expect to be around the late teens. Maybe if Cassell, Allen and Robinson get injured, that protection will kick in, but with Karl coaching and them playing in the Eastern Conference, even then I think they can make the playoffs.

By the way, I think that was the first time anyone has asked me a question by name. I feel like such a big-shot. Also by the way, in the near future I will be providing this information for all teams through realgm.com, and the format and language should be more clear.

Ok, then that pick is virtually ours next year--with the improvememnts they made and New York and Miami taking a step back, I'd guess the pick will be in the early to mid 20s. I guess we just have to hope Jesus tweaks a hammy...jk
