i was just watching the some highlights from past games and stuff but this guy looks like a real team player he is always cheering on his teammates. a player gets injured he goes out there and helps them out. he looks like a great asset to this team even if he does not get any minutes

He's a great teammate. His greatest value however is as a very tradable contract immediately following our last game.

Had him in my 2k (or Live?) game years ago. Decent 3pt shooter.

Shooter, no notable defense, plus, he gives our team a multi-cultural flavor. Fits right in!

You make it sound like he needs wheels to move around on the court. Part of being a good defender is effort.

Ha ha, that means nothing to McHale. McHale doesn't value those.

    [rquoter]Garcia imparts
knowledge
Veteran Rockets guard Francisco Garcia moved into the rotation Sunday, quickly hitting three 3-pointers.

But coach Kevin McHale hoped Garcia, more than offering another shooter, could bring the benefits of his eight NBA seasons to a team with so little experience.

“I just think Francisco has just got a presence about him,” McHale said. “He just knows what he’s doing. Like (Saturday) in practice, we were going to put D-Mo (Donatas Motiejunas) on (Dallas’ Shawn) Marion. (Garcia) cut because D-Mo had his head turned. He said, ‘You know, Marion is going to cut like that tomorrow in the game.’ That meant more to D-Mo than me screaming and yelling. He hears me yell all the time, ‘Don’t get face cut, don’t get face cut.’ He made the cut on purpose being Shawn Marion. I went, ‘thank goodness.’ ”

Garcia said McHale did not tell him he would see his first playing time since the trade to the Rockets, but he told McHale last week he would be ready. Until then, he said he wanted to help in practices by sharing his NBA experiences.

“I was just telling D-Mo since he was going to guard him (Marion) that he will flash to the basket,” Garcia said.

That really is what he does. He’s great at that. I have played against him many times. I know these guys.”[/rquoter]

Awesome. Seems like a great guy and player. Hate the fact that he's probably not here for long, but its a business. Maybe in the offseason we can waive him and sign him for less (if thats possible).

Garcia's contract can't be traded until next season.

Probably. Still might be a decent guy to keep around for the minimum depending on how free agency plays out. Small sample size, but in the few games I've seen him this year he's looked like he still got some game, if called upon.

A few months ago David Thorpe wrote something about Garcia being one of the those guys stuck on bad teams that (still) could be very helpful to a playoff team IIRC.

Will you stop saying that please? Only teams looking to dump bigger/longer salary might be interested in paying Garcia $6.4M next year, which doesn't make sense for the Rockets as they obviously value their cap space this upcoming summer.

I presume Garcia Team option has exercise by June 30th? I could see Rocket package him, Delfino and one our PF for Pau Gasol. Gasol only has 1 year left on his contract so still gives Rockets flexibility for following offseason.

Garcia's trade value this offseason is basically nil unless his contract is modified to remove the team option and extended with 2 non-guaranteed years. Nobody is going to want to pay Garcia $6.4 million for next season with the exercise of his team option and for him to be traded, the team option either has to be exercised or removed and his contract extended.

Between now and June 30, Garcia's contract can be modified to remove the team option per (60) of cbafaq.com. It can then be extended for 2 years non-guaranteed with a signing bonus as long as we have salary cap space this year to swallow the bonus. As long as this bonus is paid after July 1, 2013, then it is not considered a renegotiation but the bonus is charged to our 2012/13 cap. Once again, this can only happen if we have the cap space left in 2012/13 to swallow the signing bonus.

If Morey and Garcia's camp agree to the above, it allows Morey to control his contract throughout the offseason and it is a non-guaranteed contract that can be traded. The benefit to Garcia is he gets some extra cash (signing bonus) for allowing Morey to control his contract.

In my opinion, if there was not a renegotiation of Garcia's contract before March 1, (possibly happened as part of trade and just hasn't been announced) then it would make a lot of sense for Morey to be negotiating this modification and extension to be able to control Garcia's contract this offseason. The rub would probably be how much would he have to pay Garcia in the signing bonus for Garcia to give Morey control of his contract while the free agent offseason is going on. Perhaps Garcia thinks he could sign a long-term contract for more money early in free agency than he could get by waiting while Morey decided what to do with him. But, once again, in my humble opinion, unless somehow Garcia jumps into our rotation and proves he is a good contributor to a playoff rotation then I seriously doubt he is worth more than vet minimum next season. If Morey offers a modification and extension with signing bonus Garcia should jump on it.

The importance of all of our non-guaranteed contracts is they give Morey the flexibility to make multiple trades using the 50% rule and the $5 million rule since we are under the luxury tax. For instance if we could make Garcia's contract a non-guaranteed deal, then we could conceivably trade his contract plus Brooks non-guaranteed deal and Delfino's non-guaranteed deal and TJones and Greg Smith for Pau Gasol. We give the Lakers one or two young players that they can use and they can dump the rest of the salary (something the Lakers are most likely going to try to do with Pau to lower the huge repeater's tax they are scheduled for). Alternatively, we could cut a bunch of guys and trade TJones for Pau almost straight up. But if we do that it limits our ability to make other trades since we've cut a bunch of salary and we are pushing the cap. There is greater flexibility in having a large $$$ in non-guaranteed contracts that you can use in trade that allow you to push past the salary cap. You can repeat this same scenario and insert Dwight instead of Pau if you wish.

I've got a lot more to say about this off season but this is not the thread to say it in.

Delfino finally has someone he can practice Spanish with ... then we trade him for Pau Gasol.
